Help! I hate my Hamer!

Re: Help! I hate my Hamer!

I say you slap on a carvin pup fom way back for the weekend dude. Give em a whirl, what do you have to lose?

Re: Help! I hate my Hamer!

The Hamer Special debuted in early 1980. And like the early Sunbursts, the maple veneer was so thin on them that they really didn't affect the tone of the guitar much at all. Compared to the current Hamer Studios and Specials, the early Sunbursts and Specials sound more like the all mahogany models as opposed to the current models with thick maple caps.

I've got a 78 Sunburst and a 95 Special FM that has a killer thick flamed maple top. The Sunburst does not have the high end or tightness that comes from the maple top on my Special FM.

That being said, I would look for a pickup that compliments itself to a guitar of all mahogany construction. The stock DiMarzios in my Sunburst sound awesome. However, the bridge pickups used at that time were pretty inconsistent. Apparently I got a good one. The closest you'll find to the early stock pickups will be a DiMarzio PAF. Later on into the early 80's the pickups got hotter until they more resembled the current Super Distortions. My 83 Vector has pickups that lie somewhere in between a PAF and SD. Still sounds killer in the all mahogany body & neck, just a little hotter than the old PAFs.

All that aside, if I had one pickup to toss into my Sunburst, it would be the Brobucker. It is quite possibly the best pickup ever made. I've got one in my Talladega right now and it flat out screams.

Re: Help! I hate my Hamer!

Travis, when you say Dimarzio PAF, do you mean the recently discontinued, run of the mill PAF, or the new PAF bridge (VHPAF replacement)?

I would looooooove to try a Brobucker in this one. Maybe I'll call the CS and have 'em send me one with a "lightly soldered cover". :naughty:

Ponch, the Carvins aren't going in the Hamer. They're a bit too stuffy sounding for me.

Re: Help! I hate my Hamer!

How about a Jazz with A8?

Also the Bill Larence L-500XL is a very nice option for mahogany I guess. Never fizzy and crazy under high gain. Super clarity, tight low end etc. Perfect for leads too.

Re: Help! I hate my Hamer!

I didn't realize that DiMarzio discontinued the PAF. But yes, I meant the original, not the virtual hot PAF.

If you want to try a Brobucker in the bridge of your Hamer, I've got an extra one sitting on my table not being used. I can loan it to you for trial in your Hamer. But I would need it back as I would like to use it in another guitar. I just haven't been able to tear myself away from my Talladega to put my other Brobucker in another guitar. It's regular spaced, double cream. Let me know.

Re: Help! I hate my Hamer!

Wow, thanks Travis, I really appreciate that!

It would help me decide whether or not to go with the Custom Shop on this one.
