Help! I just want a clean channel

All I want is a lovely, round, warm, beautiful clean sound which I can lay pedals over.

And that's all I want to pay for. Hot Rod Deluxe looks like the best option, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

Cheers

Have you checked out the Roland JC-120? Its a solid state amp but don't let that scare you off, its basically designed for what you're after.

What is your budget?

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

Not sure where you're located, but GC used section sells Carvin Legacy I (VL100) heads and combos for around $500. Even saw a few X100B for $150-250 (head) $300-400 combo. If you want luscious cleans, go Carvin. Plus you still have a killer gain channel if you ever decide to use it.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

I know somebody who swears by a Fender PR246 HR Deluxe and a raft of pedals.

Since you have no requirement for the overdriven channels, consider the Fender Blues Deluxe.

Plus one

Carvin does clean real well

And has some nice gain too

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

What about a used 70s bassman? Or do you want a combo?

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

Personally for $700, I'd look at a used Deluxe Reverb Reissue, the cleans are much nicer than the Hot Rod Deluxe. I had an HRD a while back, but it didn't last long. It sounded OK, but never amazing.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

Just about anything by Fender. Obviously a Twin is what comes to mind but a Deluxe Reverb might fit the bill.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

Find the best condition, balanced with cheapest price:
1. JTM45 clone
2. Vox AC30CC (do not forget about the H also)

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

Carvin +1. X100s can switch power tubes to a different type in case you want less British and more Fendery.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

$700~
How does that thing interact with distortion pedals?

I played one with a Chandler Tube Driver in the metal days. It sounded like a Marshall with that box. Clean the JC120 is amazing. The only thing I can say slightly negative about the amp is the onboard distrotion is an acquired taste. You will most likely need a good distortion stomp with it.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

If you're thinking of the HRDx the Hot Rod Deville 212 is a little more $ but is cleaner and louder and I think it sounds a lot more refined. Go used and you're golden.

DRRIs start to break up around 4 with humbuckers and between 5 and 6 with vintage single coils. I owned one and the breakup is mellow and sweet but depending on how loud you need to be it may annoy you. the DRRI recommendation should come with a "try before you buy" warning but they sure are sweet! Amazing reverb and trem and it can be used at home without blowing the doors off.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

How about the new Fender '68 Silverface reissues? As a reissue, they are an abomination. So much different from the actual '68 amps, but they sounded quite alright when I tried them out. Probably perfect for what you're talking about. I've had the same '68 Showman head since I was 12, and that's how I've been using it for almost 30 years; like a tube power amp for preamps and pedals.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

A little aside on the RI thing; does anyone else wish they'd just call it "Silver face" or something? Its like zvex making fuzzes in the style but not a clone of other Fuzzes as opposed to a clone that...isn't.

Securb pretty much nailed it, here. (Sorry for the late reply, work and crap.)

It takes everything you can throw at it and sounds great. I extensively played on for the better half of a year at a LGS when I was too young to afford one. (About $1200 new).

It can do jazz, blues, country, and even the filthiest of heavy rock depending on your pedals. I highly recommend it for what you want.

Yeah, the RI title is a tad misleading. They are great amps, but a RI they are not.

Re: Help! I just want a clean channel

The Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is hard to beat. Everytime I've tried one out I've been impressed, and they always make pedals sound better than they do in front of my amps.
