Help: looking for SRV sound neck PU for my Albert Lee?

Hey,

first post - great forum! I have often been here, lots of interesting read!

I have an Ernie Ball Music Man Albert Lee SSS (swamp ash body, one piece maple neck / fretboard) that comes with a vintage tremolo. The guitar has SD APS II pickups as I understand it (apart from the bridge PU). I loved the AL as it was and the pickups, too - especially the in-between positions 2 and 4 as they sound somewhat different from a usual strat - although I couldn't describe in what way. But I like it. However, I want to sound a bit more traditional in the bridge and neck position. I love the Tele bridge twang and installed a Twang Banger in there. I like it! It's probably as much Tele as possible for a guitar that isn't a Tele. I also like the middle-bridge combination.

Although I like the stock neck PU in the AL, I want to sound more Strat-like here, think SRV or Hendrix. I know the two don't sound the same but it's not about having exactly the sound of those but that typical full strat growl and bark. I think the neck PU in the AL has quite a lot more twang than a typical strat, I think it's the upper mids that are very prominent. I could be wrong. Maybe I want less of those frequencies but more lower mids to make it sound fuller.

I once had a Fender CS 69 Set in there and didn't like it as much as the stock set. The neck PU however was more in the direction of what I want - if possible I'ld like to have even more of that perceived difference. I want to stick to Seymour Duncans cause I like the sound of the stock PUs - I guess I just want aother flavor PU from the same guys. I want a non staggered PU, that also works well with the middle PU so that I still have a nice in between sound of neck and midddle. I'ld like to keep the middle PU for the brigde-middle position. But if you convince me I of something else there I will try it.

That's the neck sound I like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bShcJSDf0iQ
This one as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28MuRn9GqOc

My amp is a SF Deluxe Reverb.

Every help is greatly appreciated!! Thank you very much!

get an ssl2. the alnico 5 magnet is what you are missing. flat poles do change the tone a bit from traditional fender stagger but I usually prefer flat poles as well.

not flat pole or classic fender a5, but great pups

In the first video he's using Fralin Vintage Hots. I have a set in a Strat, they're kind of on the dainty side, lots of sweet high end, but I feel like I have to dig into the strings to get blues attitude out of them, and I here it in that video also, it looks like he's coming down on the string pretty hard. I prefer them for mellow styles of music that don't require that I torture the strings.

The second video is Texas Specials of course, I keep them on hand also, and personally I hate them for playing the sort of blues they're designed to play, because I think they ice pick when you attack the string too hard. Sort of like the Fralins, I think they excel with light to moderate pickup attack.

There are so many suitable pickups that it's hard to know where to start, but if you rejected the CS '69, I'd stick to pickups above 6.2k resistance as a rule of thumb, the Ant II Surfers, D Allen Austin Blues, or the SSL-1, BKP Irish Tours w/ flat stagger, maybe SSL-5's all the way across.

The Ant description doesn't seem to say what the mags are (unless I missed it.) Do you know?

Also, were Fenders A5s thoughout the years? or is there an authoritative, reliable reference for Fender pickup mag/construction changes by year?

Thanks.

If you're not stuck with Duncans I highly recommend either Suhr V60LP or Lollar Blackface, maybe Blondes.
They all work fantastically with a modern radius.
I have Suhrs in my Silhouette Special and they're superb in that guitar.

Lollar Blackface

Re: Help: looking for SRV sound neck PU for my Albert Lee?

IMO, Lollar Blackfaces take a little more care and directed effort in the pick attack to get the sweet tones out them. The attack / string pluck characteristic is on the brittle side, and I hear it in that video. I feel like he's digging in a bit too much, too close to the bridge, either to hide the edge, or work with it, depending on your POV. It works OK for tornado-of-notes speed-blues as demonstrated, because has the precision of a knife, but when you try to play something slower and more felt out, the brittle attack and overall bright character ends up feeling a bit cold. I pulled them out of my guitar, because while I like white guy blues, I wanted to be able to cover more ground, comfortably.

I love my Blackfaces.
I set them very low..def no ice pick.

Re: Help: looking for SRV sound neck PU for my Albert Lee?

Hey guys, great input so far!
The thing is I'm not sure of how much the tone in my AL really depends on the PUs. I believe it is wired like a strat but it's rather small. Hopefully the pickups are the main difference so that I can change it to a typical strat tone by changing them.

Re: Help: looking for SRV sound neck PU for my Albert Lee?

fender used a3 on the very early strats but its been a5 ever since, at least thru 1980 for single coils.

antiquity texas hots are alnico II, antiquity II surfers are alnico V
