Hey, I know, it sucks to be a n00b, but everyone is at one sad point :(

Anyway, Im looking for a stronger richer pickup for my B.C. Rich single humbucker(bridge) warlock, Right now the BCR-6 it has sounds pertty weak and i'd like to get the great sound of Alice in chains, and Ozzy Osborne, that kinda rock. What would you recomend that would allow for most types of music and have desent clarity but nice mids and bass too? I was looking at the SH-8 Invader, maby its just cause i like its looks and its high output :32: Anyway, could someone point me to what i should try to get?

Edit: Sorry for the font, didnt know it would be unreadable.(fixed)

I'd say an SH-6 Distortion for bridge, high output, sustain, great harmonics, and RR used one. If not, then a Custom, that'll give you the PAF on steroids sound.

I looked at the SH-6, that would look really crappy in my guitar, because i hate gold for 1 and its just not fitting for my guitars style, and by custom, do you mean SH5? Cause that looks promising

Re: help me chose a pickup(new to this)p.s. Wizard didnt help

The SH-6 Isn't gold, I don't know what you're talking about. All SD pickups look about the same, and don't just dismiss it based on what you've read, it's a very good pickup. I honestly have no idea what you mean by fitting for your guitars style. It's a warlock, the SH-6 is a metal pickup. Sounds fine to me. It has plenty of low end, if that's what your concerned about.

By Custom, I mean SH-5.

Man, Ive listened to every pickup here, and They all sound nearly identical, So far i have to agree the SH-6 has the most bite and power, but it looks IDENTICAL everything about it but the words "Seymour Duncan" looks dead identical to mine, how do i know for sure or what if the pickup i have isnt a hot one and simple test?

welcome to the board mephis.

cantrell uses a jb and rhoads a distortion. if you can tell us more on your gear, ie. body wood, neck wood, effects, amp etc.we may be able to give you better suggestions. also, there's no pickup that does all sorts of music equally well. you have to compromise a little.

also, what you hear on recordings has been processed/layered etc. getting the right amps/pickups is only the beginning. ultimately, even with exact rig your heroes are using, you may not even replicate their tone 100% coz you do not have their fingers. that said, what you should aim for is something to get you within the ballpark of their tone. my belief is that you can mud a pickup's tone if its clear, but not unmud a muddy tone.

Re: help me chose a pickup(new to this)p.s. Wizard didnt help

Well, i like a gritty clean distortion tone, But i have an Agithis body, Maple neck, Gains set all the way down with drive on and voice cranked(really clean light distortion 70's style) and im running it through a pice of *** B.C. Rich 25watt amp. I know its because of my amp, but im kinda after a little richer tone with a little more range everywere.

By the sounds of it id go with a Duncan Distortion...the black open coil version not a silly gold one! You have a choice with duncans, you can get any pickup in any colour or cover type.

If not the distortion then a JB...i personally prefer the JB but you sound like you could do with a distortion.

Re: help me chose a pickup(new to this)p.s. Wizard didnt help

there's a few choices besides the distortion and jb, for classic 70's rock, a 59 won't go wrong. clear and open but it has a vintage output. for medium output, the custom family are good options. c5 has the same voicing as the 59 and the custom is more aggressive with more mids. for a thicker tone, go with a custom custom.

for versatility, i wil go for a 59 or the custom, which is a souped-up variation of a paf style pup with more aggression.

Btw, anyone think it'd be weird to get black and red color?

Re: help me chose a pickup(new to this)p.s. Wizard didnt help

I highly recommend the Duncan Custom Custom for that Guitar, and the Tone you are looking for.

get a custom custom, plus an a5 and ceramic magnet and you have the custom 5 and custom. its basically the same pup, just different magnets. black and red is cool if it matches your guitar. but bear in mind it will be difficult to sell it if you choose to get rid of it at a later date.

Yea, i was just listening to it, its about the most Crisp of them all. Very very clear.

Having a custom pickup made is outa the question lol, I just checked and it'd cost about $300 for that, i could just get an SH-11 and maby have one range you cant even hear less then the custom lol. Anyway, thanks for the help!

one red coil and one black coil, I think it would be cool.

Re: help me chose a pickup(new to this)p.s. Wizard didnt help

I have an RG 550 with a black/red JB and a red/black 59n. It looks pretty cool actually.

Re: help me chose a pickup(new to this)p.s. Wizard didnt help

I spent all night listening to sample clips, and all day today, and i think the SH-5 custom is EXACTLY what im looking for, Crisp, Clear, Vintage hard rock sounding, and agressive enough for most music.

Re: help me chose a pickup(new to this)p.s. Wizard didnt help

I'll inject my .02 cents here.

I'm a major 90's rock fan. Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains being my favorite bands.

You're BC Rich has only 1 humbucker, so I wouldn't go for the Distortion. Although the Distortion kicks ass for Overdriven sounds and Heavily distorted sounds (hence the name) I dislike the cleans. Basically, it doesn't clean up well at all.

My vote is for the JB. The sound clip on the Duncan website is VERY misleading of what that pickup can do. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains uses a JB (as mentioned before) in his G&L One Humbucker guitars. JB will distort nicely and also clean up wonderfully.

However, a Custom will serve you equally well. Custom has a ceramic magnet, so It'll have more bite.

In the end it's your call. And trust me, you'll love whatever pickup you choose. It's Seymour Duncan...

Dude, i love you're quote, Thats how my team is about cars ;). Anyway, i wana get the most sound out of it, so the Custom would prolly be the best I like alot of sizzle, and that seamed to have the most.
