Hi guys,
On my quest to find my sound I’ve tried many guitars (and owned a few) and also experimented with different pickups and configurations and wirings et al.
I looks like I’m almost there and this is where and need you most.
Right now my best sounding guitar is a PAC 604w, four AlNiCo V singles arranged in HSS configuration. The H is actually two singles with rod magnets ala Stag Mag.
On that guitar I’ve sunk the middle PUp as far as it goes, I use this position to reduce volume and gain, usually for chords and clean parts. I got this idea from Steve Morse. The “slug” coil is a bit lower than the neck and the “screw” coil is a bit higher. So when I run the bridge SS split, I have more volume on the neck and when it’s in series the bridge has more power. So I use this positions (1&5) for soloing and picking. Poaitions 2&4 are used for riffs that do not need to be loud and to clean up a bit, having the middle low helps for this. This guitar is still stock and most likely remain like that as I like it the way it is.
On the other hand, I’m modding my other strat-type guitar and I plan to make this 100% what I want. I’ve found that a humbucker sounds clearer split than in series, this makes sense, right? Can someone tell me if running it in parallel will get me a clearer (not cleaner) sound? I have a jazz on the neck, a single in the middle and something similar to the Custom on the bridge. I feel that the mud comes when playing chords, not when picking. And right now I have a 5-way switch wired normally and two additional toggles for coil splitting. I feel that the “Custom” sounds good split, but that the jazz is way too weak split. If I rewire the toggles to get series/parallel, will I have more power than splitting? I had a Jazz/JB combo and it sounded great, the JB specially when split, even-though it was not trembucker; the jazz was the weakest link when split. So I thought about the Stag Mag, but they exist only for the neck and are also pretty hot. Has anybody tried a Stag Mag in the neck?
My configuration will be HSH and the switching will do Pos 1&5 H&H, I want the same volume in case I chose to solo with either one. To lower the power/volume when needed I will either split them or put them in parallel with the toggles. Pos 3 only for middle to get low gain and volume. And Pos 2&4 will have each humbucker with the middle, no autosplit, I will use this for lower volume and (maybe) cleaner sound for riffs or strums. I will have a master volume and two tones, wired to the switch to work independently for each humbucker.
So, which pickups can you recommend? And what about the series/parallel/split for the humbuckers?
Thanks a lot four your advise!
Cheers,
Walter
