Help me cure my Charvel

I recently bought a 90’s Charvel Fusion. It is in great shape. One issue, it had a Bill Lawrence L500XL and was way too powerful. I tried adjusting pickup height but could never get it to a usable output. I swapped it out for a Full Shred. Same deal. Like a singer with the mic up against his mouth. Swapped that for a Dimarzio Air Zone. A little better but still too powerful in the lower kids and bass. I tried removing the tone from the circuit and swapping the volume pot. No bueno. I did some research and think a lower output pickup like the “78” or a Screamin Demon might help tame it. Am I on the right track?

You might even go lower output like a 59 or other PAF-based pickup. You will get more touch-sensitivity, and less 'everything is always loud all the time'.

If the Shred is not thin enough I don’t know what will be, it is very articulate IMHO.

Did you try to lower it?

both the demon and 78 are fairly bright and dont have a lot of low end, so they could suit this well

Is this really a pickup/guitar issue?
do you have another guitar? Does it the same?
what happens if you turn down the volume on the guitar?

I'm curious what the amp and cab are. The Full Shred is pretty freakin' bright and not chunky on the bottom IME. I'm surprised there's still a problem.
