Help me decide an amp

Hi guys,

I wanted to buy a new amp as I'm tired of my ****ty solid state amp. I looked upon a few amps and I came across these two

1) orange micro dark + orange ppc 112
2) marshall dsl40c

I play prog metal, prog rock and a little bit of jazz and blues
I need a practice amp and I won't be using it to play in gigs.
My budget is around 700 $.
Please help me decide and if u guys have any better suggestions let me know
I'm using an esp Ltd with a boss me-80 for effects and all.
And please don't suggest me to check out local pawn shops and stuff as I live in India and u don't find such stuff here

Thanks

Re: Help me decide an amp

The DSL will be better for the wide range of genres you plan on playing. It has 2 channels and two modes per channel plus it responds fairly well to pick attack and guitar volume on the green crunch and the red lead 1. It is all tube with a classic EL34 power tube section. it is a good sounding amp across the board. It is plenty loud enough to gig with a rock drummer, but has an effective master volume for quieter use. The draw back is the cheap speaker. Sweetwater did have one that came with a Creamback. Maybe they still do? Or perhaps pickup a broken in G12T75 or Vintage 30 on the used market if a better new speaker breaks the budget.

The Orange micros are good amps but they are strictly rock amps in my experience. It does not clean up that much by rolling back the volume on your guitar if set up with a healthy amount of gain. If you set it where the amp would clean up it doesn't have enough gain for lead work. It also has a hard time keeping up with a rock drummer.

The OR15 on the other hand....but the OR15 is a single channel amp.

Re: Help me decide an amp

Peavey Classic 30 has a bunch of good tones in it

Almost all the Peavey line sound good and are built like tanks
With the exception of the knobs on the JSX

Re: Help me decide an amp

How loud do you practice? I think the 40 W all-tube Marshall is more of a gigging amp than a play-at-home-quietly kinda deal.

Re: Help me decide an amp

I prefer the Orange but if it was going to be my only amp I'd probably do the DSL40C for the channel switching and added power.

Re: Help me decide an amp

DSL40C. It's a good amp, and I could probably live with it as an only amp.

Re: Help me decide an amp

Orange Rocker 15 if your looking for tube. The solid state Orange 35RT is a great amp.

Re: Help me decide an amp

If your budget is $700, you can do far better than a micro dark and a ppc112. Try a Rocker 30 combo (you can occasionally find them for as low as $700 on reverb) or a dual terror plus a cheap 112 or 212.

Re: Help me decide an amp

I have personally always loved the Fender Blues JR ($530) for a tube practice amp. Tone and reverb are decent and I have taken it out of the house to jam many times with no problems.

I do own the Micro Dark also and it sounds a bit stale to me, never played it through 112 cab however.

Good ole Chappers did a great review, check it out!

Re: Help me decide an amp

You have a pretty healthy budget for a home amp, so take your time here. There are a lot of choices. You can go modeling if you like versatility, or a simple tube amp if you like your pedals. There are even higher end SS amps that would work well at that budget. Research is free, so go play a bunch of them, watch videos, and assess how you like to get your tones, and what your needs are. There are likely several amps that will meet your needs here.

Re: Help me decide an amp

I finally downsized after playing larger Marshall 412 rigs for years. I got a DSL 40C and love it. The clean sound is surprisingly nice and I like the versatility that this amp has. I can nail a lot of classic rock tones and there's plenty more crunch when I'm in that kind of mood. Compared to my other Marshalls, the neck tone is very sweet without the fartyness that you can get with other amps. I wish the pedal could control more options but that's not a big deal. I put a Celestion Classic 80 speaker in the amp and that was a nice improvement.

Re: Help me decide an amp

Of those two amps, I agree with the rest on the Marshall. It's more versatile and with the 20 watt setting it works for home use, but you'll also have the power to gig with it if needed.
