After noticeing that I don't have ANY conventional Overdrive, or Distortion pedals, I decided I need to get one. haha. But I'm having a bit of trouble decideing which.
These are the Four I'm leaning towards right now. But feel free to suggest others(keep it under $100 though, I'm poor and $100 is the most I'm gonna spend preferably alot less though), although I must state before hand, I REALLY hate tube screamers. And I'm planning on useing whatever I get on a clean tube amp, occasionally as a boost on an already dirty amp, but mostly as a Straight Low-gain dirt box.

So what do YOU think?

Re: Help Me decide which dirt box to get...

I've had the two Boss pedals you mentioned and really didn't care for either. Can't tell you about the DOD or the Marshall as I've never tried them.

However......for a mere $40.00 have you considered the Bad Monkey by DigiTech? Not a bad pedal by any means and the Bass knob is a huge plus. Not to middy sounding either.

Re: Help Me decide which dirt box to get...

The Boss BD-2 works very well as a straight boost (it's got bucket loads of signal boost in it), and also does the low gain thing pretty well. Of the pedals that you've listed there, the one that I think does the best low gain is the SD-1.

I checked out a digi badmonkey awhile back and found it to sound really processed and grainy. Just didn't dig it that much. But I'll make sure to check it out again now, maybe I just heard a bad one or something, I dunno.

I have only heard clips of these and the BB II sounds good to me. Try for a used Keeley modded Boss BD2, those pedals are sweet.You could also try for used Barber LTDs (around $125 new) or MI Audio BBDs. Check out the clips for these pedals on their websites.

DS-1 will do all the things you want, and it's very good at being inexpensive.

Re: Help Me decide which dirt box to get...

I would go for a used MI Audio Crunchbox or Barber Direct Drive...either can be found for sale on The Gear Page, for under 100 bones. If you want to buy new, maybe that Bluesbreaker is the ticket.

Re: Help Me decide which dirt box to get...

+1 for a used MI Audio Crunchbox. This box will provide as little or as much gain as it sounds like you're after. It is just a really good pedal.

Another idea might be a used RAT. Another pedal that I love for its versatility. Make sure it has the LM308 chip in it (I don't believe the new ones have it).

Good luck with your search.

Voted Marshall BBII

. . . i have one and love it !

Great gritty OD and a Boost in one pedal - great value for my money !

And it comes with a nice price too ;) - very underrated if you ask me !

Do try one !

My other LOVE, and even more than the BBII, is the uber-sexy sounding Boss BD-2.

Just listen to the samples - they are pretty spot on !

I LOVE THIS THING !!!

Hope you do too . . .

. . . true about the SD-1 (i have one), but lets not forget about the bigger brother of the SD-1 and cousin of the BD-2, the OD-3 !

If i had to schoose (for my own use), it would be like this !

1st = BD-2

2nd = BBII

3rd = OD-3

4th = SD-1

My 4cents
;)
