help me find a pair for my Full Shred bridge!

hey everyone, i've got a pair of SD humbuckers on my guitar, the 59 in the neck and the Full Shred in the bridge. it used to be a Custom Custom there, which was nice but not what i wanted, and switched to the FS which suits me far better. the problem now is that the 59 and the FS don't really pair up pretty well. the 59 is too mushy and thick sounding compared to the FS in the bridge, and that proves to be annoying since i set all my amp and pedal settings according to the FS. the FS is a little thin and clear, but that doesn't bother me since i can compensate with the amp settings.

i could try tinkering with the pickups' and pole pieces' heights some more, but i'm contemplating the idea of finding a better pair for my FS bridge. i'd like something clearer than the 59, less mushy, especially in the low end, with a more even EQ (more mids, less piercing highs and overbearing lows) and maybe voiced a little more modern. i'd like it to be a versatile pickup which can handle both cleans (the cleaner-than-vintage kind) and higher gain settings. i'm a little more of a clean guy though when it comes to the neck position.

what do you guys think? i've got no experience with any other SD pickups but i'd like to stick to them for practical reasons.

Well, there is a such thing as a Full Shred Neck. Presumably, that might be a good match for the Full Shred Bridge. :P My initial thought was a Jazz, since it pulls back though low end quite a bit, and is nice and bright for a neck pickup, however you mentioned more mids and less piercing highs, so I might take that back. So that brings me to the Sentient. Which is a nice middle ground between the Jazz and 59'. It's balanced and versatile, takes the vintage PAF sound and blends it with a more modern tone, does both clean and gain very well.

thanks for the suggestions guys. i was leaning towards the Jazz, the Sentient and the FS neck based on the descriptions. but i was afraid the Jazz could be too weak for what i want, and that the Sentient might not be much of a change? the FS neck though seems like the most logical option out of the bunch, does anyone have anything to share how it fares in clean settings?

Full shred neck, Jazz neck, Humbucker from Hell.

If he really wants less piercing highs, why in the world would he be using the Full Shred Bridge? I'm assuming he may be referring to the brittle highs of the 59n. I don't find the Humbucker from Hell to be anywhere near as bright as people assume it is. Its just clear.

I'd go Full Shred neck. I have one in my Les Paul. It's a great neck p'up on clean, with gain and split. I recently put fullister screws in the bridge side coil and it thickened it up just enough for me. It's very clear and cutting but not harsh and never muds up.

one more vote for the FS neck. thanks!

TBH the Full Shred bridge is bright enough without being piercing, to me. its extreme highs are rather smooth, at least in my guitar. when i switch to the 59 in the neck though it's a different story, i'm afraid to pick hard without busting an eardrum.

FS neck. I've searched for years for a commercially available neck humbucker that is not too muddy on the lows and is super articulate in the highs without being thin. FS is my favorite by far at the moment. I pull the poles under the low 3 strings on one coil and adjust all the remaining poles for even string balance, sounds even better that way.

What are 'practical reasons' for you staying with SD's? Are they just easier to obtain for you?

I ask only because I recommend the Dimarzio Air Norton. :naughty:
