Help me pick a Marshall pedal

Hi All!

Here's my deal: I have a ES-335 semi-hollow body clone and an American strat. I have a Peavey Classic 30 (30W, open-back) with JJ tubes and a Reverend All-tone speaker. I mailny record at this point, so I'm digging the small tube amp.

I want to get a pedal that will help turn that little amp into a Marshall stack (please stop laughing...). The sound I want is heavy, but not a scooped-mids metal sound. I think the song "Freaks" by the band Live is a good example. Just a good thick Marshall tone for alternative rock.

Which Marshall pedal will be best for my needs? The Jackhammer, Bluesbreaker or the Gov'nor?

Thanks!!

Definitely not JH..

The GV probably is what you want...

Bluesbreaker provides smaller amounts of toneshape for you. (relatively)

Try them out if you can!

Re: Help me pick a Marshall pedal

I had a few Marshall pedals, and they didn't last long. Spend a little more and get a Fulltone OCD. It'll Marshallize your amp better than most.

Re: Help me pick a Marshall pedal

Well I use main through a plexi, but I like the Guv'nor

Re: Help me pick a Marshall pedal

I forgot to mention...

I already own a Visual Sound Route 66 which is similar to the TS-808.

So, getting the Classic 30 to sound like a Marshall is the goal.

Toneport UX1/UX2 and a computer will get you a lot more than just a Marshall. Record one pass direct and one mic'd through your amp - it's a good technique.

I use my C30 clean with a stock Boss DS1 to get into the Marshall land..... of course it will never be quite a Marshall but it does work for me.... I think the biggest trouble with the C30 is the cab size.... it will never get that huge bottom end... so i use a sealed back Ext cab as well sometimes....

AGREED.

I love that OCD, I'm getting one soon.

Hell yeah it will!!

I've got an OCD and it's a VERY British-sounding pedal, and the gain is good enough to use as a stand-alone source even. Awesome little box.

Re: Help me pick a Marshall pedal

stratdeluxer and JeffB swear by the carl martin plexitone and I would trust them. I have a M.I. Audio crunchbox and it does the Marshall thing better than anything I have used prior and they are very reasonably priced.

Re: Help me pick a Marshall pedal

MI AUDIO CRUNCH BOX!!! It is a JCM 800 about to explode in a little red box. I own a real Marshall and I can tell you, this little box sounds just like it.

Cheers,

Thanks for all the replies!

I ended up getting the Barber Direct Drive. This pedal sounds amazing...just what I was looking for. Maybe not an exact Marshall emulation, but it covers many tones very well without too much compression.

Me too.. and I am not crazy about using pedals. The tones are very marshally, and the pedal is wisely built for versatility while playing live.
