Help me pick pickups for son's Mexican Strat for Christmas gift

No. 1 son has a Mexican Strat (lefty model, maple neck, regular whammy bar). He hates the stock ceramic pickups and has been looking to upgrade, I don't know what else to get him for Christmas so I was going to help him out there.

I was looking at going with Duncans, no sense in chasing boutique or custom stuff for a 21-year-old kid who's not a pro.

His musical tastes are kind of stuck in the past, compared to other 21-year-olds. (I taught him well LOL!) He's into Beatles, Buddy Holly, Beach Boys, Byrds (he has one of those Agile 12-string Les Paul copies that he's upgraded with GFS Retrotron Memphis pickups, the kind that mimics Ricks), Tom Petty/Mike Campbell, the Edge, country pickers like Luther Perkins, etc.

He plays through a Fender Princeton Chorus solid state amp (decent clean channel for a SS amp, although at some point he's looking to trade up to a tube amp) and uses a Boss Blues Driver pedal more for a boost and to try to replicate a bit of overdrive than for distortion, he's not into grungy noise or chainsaw distortion. (He also has an Epi Sheraton that he's upgraded the pickups to TV Jones Classics to get a Gretschy twang.) He also uses a compressor and a delay.

Given what I've described about the sounds he's into, what set would you folks who are more familiar with the Duncan line than I am recommend? I've listened to some samples online but it's hard to judge.

Ssl1 in middle and neck, something with more beef in the bridge like ssl-5, twangbanger, strabro90, lil jb

hmmm my first tought was Antiquity Texas Hot set, for that bluesy strat sound.
Alnico II Pro if he prefers the classic 50's strat tone.

Twangbanger, APS-2, APS-2.

It may be necessary to modify the output conductor connections on the Twangbanger to maintain the correct phase relationship with the other pickups.

How do you do that, modifying the connectors that is?

Don't think so, the everything axe is versatyle but is more bucker hot sounding, for that he's better going for a ygwnie set, wich at least is hotter than vintage hot and very sweet

JB Jr. in the bridge and Hot Rails in the neck and middle...he will thank you once he learns how awesome a powerful Strat is ;)

Definitely think the SSL1s is the way to go, and as mentioned previously may want something beefier in the bridge...but IMO any Duncan set will be an upgrade to the stock MIM.

If the phase relationship between the middle APS-2 and Twangbanger needs correcting, the simplest option involves repositioning the ground link between the metal baseplate and the bobbin soldering eyelet where the black output conductor is connected. Shift the jumper over to the eyelet where the white conductor is connected. Connect the Twangbanger's black conductor to the selector switch. Connect its white conductor to ground.

I usually swap the actual conductor wires from the bobbin too. This avoids confusion in the future.

Ok, I'll be the radical and suggest QP's for the neck and middle with a JBjr. in the bridge.

Re: Help me pick pickups for son's Mexican Strat for Christmas gift

I'd have to go with a set of SSL-2s all around for the tones he is after. The flat poles work better with modern neck radii and string gauges, and he will have an amazing sounding Strat for all of the styles he's after.

Sounds like he likes clean and twangy. I like the SD Alnico Pro 2 in the neck and middle, Twang Banger in the bridge. Out of all the Strats I have owned and played, this is still the best sounding pickups to my ears, and versatile. I owned a BD and it really worked well with this setup.
