Help me replace my bridge humbucker!!

I figured I'd start a new thread in continuation of my Saturday Night Special experience. It turns out it's a really nice pickup but just didn't really fit the bill in my particular situation and setup. In my guitar it was a little too aggressive sounding and didn't have enough low end in my all maple long scale guitar.

I need a good recommendation on a bridge pickup that has a good firm low end, a lot of mid-range and a top-end that cuts but in a smooth way. Preferably something in the 9 to 10 DCR range. What can you suggest? I have all the magnet types so if I need to fine tune I can. Please try not to suggest a pickup based on its magnet. I'm more interested of how the wind effects the end result.

I was looking at WLH but that still seems a little too aggressive and not as smooth as I would like.. Some suggest the Brobucker but I am unfamiliar with it. Please help.

Slash bridge, BKP The Mule, 59 with an A4 mag.

Re: Help me replace my bridge humbucker!!

What exactly do you mean by "too aggressive"? You mean too bright? Too much midrange? Not enough clarity?

If you need firm low end and smooth highs with lots of mids, you can't beat an Alt 8 or Custom 8.

Keep in mind that an all maple guitar is probably going to be inherently quite bright with a lot of bite. To get smooth highs you'll want to stay away from any pup with a ceramic mag, and PAF type winds especially with A5 magnets. The 59/C hybrid is probably going to be very bright in your guitar (however, if you put in an A2 it may work...it will give you the big low end but it won't be very "firm").

Re: Help me replace my bridge humbucker!!

The only one we make in that range would be the 59/Custom Hybrid that meets your specs. Good thing, though, is that it is an excellent pickup.

my all maple long scale guitar.

isn't there a Seth in the neck? what other factors are going on? amp? string gauge? pedals? style of music? etc?

some people might suggest not being concerned with a DCR spec

this point is a little bit negated by this next one.

this is on the right track. but it's not just the wind. it's also the slug/screw alloys, the type of wire used, and even the physical properties of the bobbins (for the hyper OCD).

can you clarify what you mean by "aggressive" and "smooth"?

some suggest the Brobucker can be a little thick sounding.

sounds like you might benefit from calling up a few companies. call DiMarzio after 12noon EST and ask for tech support. call Mojotone and anyone that answers can help. call any company you're interested in, run down your rig and what your goals are and each one should have 1 or 2 solid options. if you want to go custom, consider calling Brandonwound or Wolfetone or ReWind, although Mojotone can throw in slight custom tweaks on standard production models.

Re: Help me replace my bridge humbucker!!

the brobucker is a fantastic pup. with the degaussed a5 some say its dark but i kicked all sorts of ass in the bridge of my les paul special

Re: Help me replace my bridge humbucker!!

Well I can tell you that the WLH bridge definitely is a more vintage sounding pickup that is aggressive (especially in the mids into the highs), and compared to that the Hybrid bridge is a little smoother overall with a little more low end, more of a sizzle on the top rather than a shriek, and the mids are smooth (maybe a touch relaxed but not scooped or forward).

Re: Help me replace my bridge humbucker!!

Brobucker rules in a bright guitar. Some extra girth yet it retains vintage feel under your hands. Exceptionally sweet mids. It absolutely sings. One of my favorite pickups.

You might also consider the PATB-3, plenty of midrange there. Low end is balanced and the highs are civilized without sounding rolled back. Expressive, not too smooth but not overly aggressive either. Good choice for a long scale axe. IMO not quite as touch responsive as the Brobucker.

DiMarzio Air Norton could be worth looking at too- it's said to work well for a little extra fullness in bridge position. Never owned one myself but I had great results fattening up a skinny sounding trem guitar with The Breed. The Air Norton might have some of that low end depth with a more polite personality.

Re: Help me replace my bridge humbucker!!

Part of me wants to say Benedetto P.A.F. or Benedetto A6.
The other part of me says I'm crazy. But from looking at the specs, it would be interesting at the very least. Think smooth, buttery acoustic - like tone.

i like the patb3 as well. i use mine with an alnico 2 magnet but i bet it would be killer with a rough cast a5 or uoa5

Those are actually great pickups in semis or full maple hollowbodies, but I've never tried them in a solidbody.
