help me with SWEEPING

Re: help me with SWEEPING

Get familiar with the shapes and picking them before even beginning the sweeping technique.

There are still some shapes, like the descending deminished arpeggios in Nevermore's Final Product, that I can alternate pick faster and more cleanly than I can sweep.

Re: help me with SWEEPING

If you are having trouble because you feel like you need to dig in and pick every note, (it might sound dumb) but hold the pick at the very back end slowly and lightly drag it over the strings as you fret the notes. Just a little practice exercise thingy to get used to the motion of it.

It's all about synchronizing the left hand with th right, and because usually there is only one note per string there is no room to miss a note.

It would be good practice while you are learning it slow to kind of mute the other strings to stop them from ringing out too. You will end up getting them much cleaner & defined later on.

It's all about miscle memory so even before you start trying to pick them, memorise the shapes and just fret the notes back and forth.

Hope this helps!

Re: help me with SWEEPING

Master alt picking. It's a great skill for building left and right hand synchronization (which is the hardest element) and sweeping will come much easier after that.

When you can nail this, you're doing well :laugh2:

Code:
-------0-3p0-----3h7p3---------7p0h12p0h7----------12-15p12-------15h19p15-------------19-
-----0-------0/5-------5-----8------------------12----------12/17----------17-------20----
---0---------------------4/9-----------------12-------------------------------16/21-------
-2----------------------------------------14----------------------------------------------

Re: help me with SWEEPING

It took me ages to figure it out and learn how to sweep right... now I over use it... :fingersx: ... and I still practice.
My tips:
1. Never give up even if it doesn't work at first.
2. Start slowly. you'll be able to learn new sweeps faster in a while but you need to hit every note when you sweeps. No dead notes, ever.
3. practice on two strings, 3 strings, same pattern, up and down. Then move to 6 strings, changing patterns etc.
4. Major chords with an added 7 is the easiest thing you can sweep on 6 strings.
5. Don't limit yourself to chords- I sweep on the pentatonic scale and the major scales (or any othe modus)... It also need practice but it's easier to build a melody with it in your solo.
6. Once you can sweep play it with songs... timing is everything and it is not easy. A metronome just isn't helpful enough.
7. Listen to good sweepers- Gambale, Kotzen, YJM... feel is more important then spped in any technique.
8. Some people advice to mute the strings with your right hand- it's more about the pressure and controling them... I didn't practice these way too much but it's a good method.
