help no dc resistance in vintage Custom

Hi there,

This is my 2nd starter now, here, long time lurker before and in between, hope you can bare with me, and mostly give me some advice.

I just gotten a vintage zebra Custom in. It is splittable, all wires seemd good and it is at good length.

I try measuring all I could but all results are the seem. 1. (infinite) . No measurable dc ratings..I fear the worst, what to do?

Thanks for your time.

Make sure you have the meter set to the right range to start with. Its a simple mistake to make. Then you should have around 7.2k between the red and green wires, and also between the black and white wires.

It would be odd for both coils to be open. But its possible if the pup was abused real bad.

Re: help no dc resistance in vintage Custom

I have had the red/white together and tried all different combinations between the colors. I have had a 59B with the same 'shipment' and that measures in the same settings a nice 8,38DC.

I tried hooking it up in a jack in front of a guitar, the 59B starts sounding about 4 inches away from the strings, the Custom does make sounds as well..but less output and maybe around...2 inches away from the strings.
I remeasured as I thought there was sound, there must be a dc reading but nope. nothing.

I am getting very upset lately with my quest for the ultimate Seymour:confused: 3-4 weeks back I purchased a set of EVH 78's, turned out they were Alnico Pro 2's from the Custom shop..it's all custom but the word Custom seems to start haunting me!:yell:

The pickup looks great btw-not at all abused or rusty. Not messed with either. Tight taped, screws are solid and even wax a little. Duncan Custom script, plain back plate..the Custom of all Customs:-(

So both coils broken..I cannot even make it into 1 hybrid!

If you get any sound at all, they must read something. I don't know what else to suggest, except double-check your meter settings. Can you take readings on another pup just to make sure the meter's ok?

Re: help no dc resistance in vintage Custom

Yep, that's waht I did, same setting, same delivery , 59B pickup. Works fine at 8,37DC.

I measured ten's of pickups this way..never ever any problems.

That there's a weak sound does surprise me too? But it is not much compared to (again) the same trick I use to make sound with the 59B. I think it is 'leaking' sound maybe? Like when you turn a volume shut and still some sound is coming out-thin, vague, soft.

Its definitely possible that a break deep within the coil would allow some "bleed-over", or induced voltage to get through. Its just odd that both coils would be open. If you're positive that both coils are broke, I'm not sure there's much else you can do except a rewind.

Not always, I have had pickups that read all kind of crazy things and ones that have not read nearly anything but, they have got sound out of them. No good sound at all and weak as hell but, they made some sound.

Kramer, you have got a bad or broken connection in the pickup. It could be in the coils or, it could be where the wire connects to the coil wire, etc.

Hi guys, thanks for your input/time.

It's weak and the readings are definately zero (1. in this case, infinite)..I fear the worst, see the picture..beautiful.

The 59B has plenty dc (8,38), the Custom 1. dc (infinite).

Can we save it or does it need to be rewinded (85$ at SD's Custom shop-help)

See if the wires connecting to the coils needs repairing. Other than doing that....you'll need a rewind
