HELP!! pickup wiring.....

I just completley re wired a Peavey Falcon guitar [strat style] according to a schematic I found here http://seymourduncan.com/support/schematics/3s_1v_1t_5w.html on SD's site and I am getting a pronounced drop in volume in the 2 and 4 position on the 5 way switch, any ideas why? This guitar has only 1 tone 1 vol which forced me to use the master vol and master tone setup, any suggestions on a better way to set it up? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions, Deb

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

Are all three pickups the same brand? It sounds like your middle pickup is out-of-phase with the other two. Try reversing its wires.

btw - Welcome to the forum, and how do you like that Falcon? I've been checking them out on eBay.

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

Love the Falcon otherwise, saw the reviews first on Harmony Central. It's American made, solid piece of alder wood no veneer, thick rosewood fretboard and very nice frets, all quality parts tho you have to anchor down the Kahler it's worthless, but this thing sounds like a vintage Fender and for $190 bucks! Mine's a tobacco burst and it's a beauty for a 20 year old guitar. Got it on Ebay and am looking for another so don't bid against me :laugh2: So reverse the mid pickup then? I'll give it a go! THANKS, Deb

You've got one already . . . so don't bid against me. :D

Yeah . . . reverse the middle, and then let us know how that worked out. We can go from there.

:biglaugh: I see you're a Peavey guy so you really should have 1 of these, you'd love it! But from what I have read you want one of the early ones, mines an '86 Custom which the only difference is the rosewood as far as I can see! It's great that Peavey.com has owners manuals for them after 20 years, helps! I just hate that you need a special tool to adjust the torsion rod, neck needs a slight turn, haven't looked yet but am hoping I can do it without the tool they recommend. OK will try the reversing thing tomorrow, thanks again! deb

Yeah, and there's one on eBay right now thats only about 20 miles from me. Problem is, this just isn't a good time for me to be buying another guitar. :yell:

That's the one I am watching, and another just like it is supposed to be listed soon. The one near you looks like it is in a music store, I like to buy from private owners if possible. And the best news is reversing the polarity on the mid pickup did the trick! Thanks so much! Oh and do your models of Peaveys need the 'special tool' for turning the neck? Looked at it and I am puzzled as to what else I could use. Thanks again for all of your help! Deb

Weird coincidence - Todd is one of my favorites too. I must have at least 6 copies of "Todd" in vinyl. All of them worn out. :D

Good news about the pup. My older MIA Peavey's do need that tool, but the import one uses a standard allen wrench. I believe you could use a 5/16" socket, but it would probably need to be a thinwall version. You might get a standard socket in there. (I've never actually adjusted mine.)

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

Every-one in my house is so sick of Todd Rundgren!LOL! I have been a fan forever, have seen him too many times to count! Glad to see another fan! Will see him with The New Cars soon, NOT my fav project he has ever done but they do a few of his songs too so I will have to live with it! Small world I must say! Thanks again for your help and nice meeting you! Deb

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

I haven't seen him in years. He was just in town a few months ago with Joe Jackson. Unfortunately, I had something else going on that night and couldn't catch him. :yell:

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

Got that other Falcon, hope it doesn't need as much work as the last one! any-way, I hate to bug all of you again but I have 1 more question about the falcon I rewired, it still has an unusual amout of what I would call "static" noise unless you are touching the strings or bridge which I assumes is a grounding issue, sound right? i don't get it tho, I grounded everything! thanks again for any insight, Deb

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

Noise issues like this are tough to troubleshoot . . . especially long distance. ;)

Here's a couple things to think of:

If the noise goes away when you touch the strings, it usually means the guitar is grounded properly. In other words, the noise is from you and the guitar's ground is properly shunting it. There's a good article somewhere, (GuitarNuts, maybe), that talks about this. Your body is 3/4's water, which picks up radio noise easily. You hold the guitar next to your body. When you touch the strings, the guitar grounds you.

Its also possible that the volume and tone pots are dirty. If there's high resistance between the carbon track and the wiper, it can generate "crackly" noise also. I wouldn't think that touching the guitar strings would kill that, though.

Not sure I can offer much else. I've been in electronics for over 35 years and some of my guitars still make noise. Others don't. Sometimes I think its voodoo. ;)

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

Thanks Artie! All the pots and switches are new when I rewired the thing, just a noisy guitar I suppose!! Thanks again for all of your help it has been nice to come here to get help with troubleshooting all of this! maybe I will have to pick up a 2nd job as a guitar tech now! Hahahahaha! :laugh2: Deb

Re: HELP!! pickup wiring.....

Glad I could be of some help. Stick around. Pull up a chair and make yourself comfortable. We tend to have a testosterone imbalance around here. :D
