Help please, wiring experts: blackout preamp on/ off?

I'm curious if there's something one could do on a Les Paul that would allow one of the knobs to become push/pull on/off for the preamp so that it could be switched between PAF and metal? I would be so happy. Would also be ok with going to one volume/one tone or two volume/one tone if needed :)

sadly there's no switching built into the bomp :( and it's non-trivial to wire it up yourself. you'd need to take all 8 pup wires from the 2 4-conductor humbuckers, and have a switch that will route them all to the bomp or not at the same time. (my switch naming terminology ain't that great, something like an 8-pole, double throw?) so you could send all the signals to the bomp in one position, and off to some passive wiring in t'other. i'd think that you'd need separate volume & tone stacks for each as they'll need hugely different values of stuff, possibly even separate pup selectors for each mode too.

To clarify, you want to be able to bypass the preamp, and have the pickups go direct out?

Darn! I wish they would add this feature to a product revision. The preamp on/off is turning into a very cool and popular feature on new guitar models.

Let me chew on this over the weekend. It might not be as difficult as first appears. I wish I had one of these in my hand.

If you can do it you will be a god... Many guys over at 7string.org have tried and failed to slay this dragon. I would shower praise in obscenely copious amounts over you whilst throwing a dozen vestal virgins at your feet.

I'll have to go ahead and purchase one of these so I can check it out "up close and personal".

Film at eleven. ;)

Re: Help please, wiring experts: blackout preamp on/ off?

I've done it but I'll never ever do it again.the amount of work doesn't warrant the convenience of an active plus passive circuitry. I was having issues with the output jack so I ended up using two jacks. one for active, one for passive (which I practically did with a 2 way toggle to toggle the outputs). the signals kept bleeding. And I had to use 3 toggles in total. 2 for the pickups (to rerout them to the blackout modular preamp or the passive circuit) and one for the jack. I used a little wooden block on top of them so they'd look like one huge, wide toggle.

It's hell. I'll never do it again.

Not sure what matters most, the Blackout sound or the active/passive switch, but Carvin does this and sells the harnesses here.

Tho this solution would be pretty fiddly, too, as it assumes the pot holes are Carvin spaced.

Ah. I think the closest I'll get is using my liberator to swap in/out some d-activators as the needs of my music change but it doesn't sound like there's a good active/passive solution on the market yet, despite the popularity of the feature... Who do we need to talk to about this, Mr Skopp?
