Help!! Problem with Paralell Split

I am trying to split in paralell the inner coils of 2 humbuckers with an on-on DPDT switch. when in the middle posistion of the 3-way I would l like both pickup to split in parallel when switch is activated. Here is how I wired it

The bridge posistion seems to be split in paralell but the neck does not sound like it is. Is the wiring correct for this configuration?

Re: Help!! Problem with Paralell Split

That diagram is correct, however, keep in mind that the pups will be split all the time when the switch is activated. That is, you'll have:

1. neck single coil
2. neck & bridge single coils (parallel)
3. bridge single coil

I see that as a good thing.

If you aren't sure if a pup is split, gently tap on the pole pieces of each coil with a screwdriver to see if its "on".

Split all the time is what I want when the switch is activated. When switch is activated the bridge pickup loses a little output as I would expect and the outer coil is definately off. The neck output remains the same. No loss at all in output. In my diagram is the grounding on the switch correct for both pickups?

Re: Help!! Problem with Paralell Split

Yup. Your diagram looks fine. You'll have both inner (stud) coils active when split.

Re: Help!! Problem with Paralell Split

and the middle position, won't be hum cancelling unless you wire one of the pups backwards (i.e. black to ground / green hot) and flip a mag, right?

Maybe thats my problem. I flipped the magnet on the bridge pickup. So does that mean I need to wire the neck pickup backwards to get Hum Canceling?

Yes, and here's where your splitting gets to be a little more complex. As you said, if you flip the magnet, that pup will now be out-of-phase with the neck. So, to fix that, you reverse the green and black wires. And that means, you are no longer splitting the bridge to the inside coil. So, you must wire your switch like this:

1_inside.png

The red/white wires of the neck go to ground, while the red/white wires of the bridge go to the bridges green wire.

Note: To split pups to the stud coil, you always take the red/white wire to the green wire. Since the green wire usually goes to ground, the diagrams show it that way. But its important to note, that its actually the green wire. Thats why, in this diagram, you aren't taking the bridge split to ground anymore.

Does that make sense? :D
