HELP!!!! Quick Pleeease! I'm Right In The Middle of This PU Swap

My Guitar Weeps

New member
I'm in the middle of a pickup swap as we speak. I've pulled out a stock tex mex tele neck pu. I'm replacing it with a APTR-1 alnico II pro which came with a black foam padding on the bottom and 2 black long wood screws (PU is brand new but not in the box.

This is it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200102015906

The silver pu screws from the fender pu I took out are not large enough in diameter for the wholes in the sd pu. The black screws that came with the sd are not big enough in diameter for it either. Matter of fact there aren't any threads in the bobbin screw holes.

This is my 1st tele neck pu, so I assume that the foam is the spacer (like the tubing from the fender pu's) and I'm suppposed to mount the sd pu directly to the body with the long black screws that came with it.:scratchch :scratchch

Is that correct? How do I do it? If you guys could give me some advise here I would greatly appreciate it!

yea it looks like the way the Previous owner had it, it was directly mounted to the body.

so just either mount the pickup to your body....or..find sone small Nuts that will work with your original fender screws and use them on the bottom of the SD pickup so you can still Pickgaurd mount it

Well its a 3 pu Nashville tele......i've never done any body mounting so is it the same as pickguard? In other words do you still take the screw thru the pg thru the bobin then to the wood? Do you still use the surgical tubing spacer?

Well for know I've superglued some nuts onto he bottom of the pu (i've done thid before for a HB) but I noticed that before the glue got tacky enough to hold the nuts in place the bottom of the magnets were trying to pull the nuts to themselves. I can always take them off but if the mags are pulling the nuts wont that lessen the stregth of the pull on the strings a little, therefore having an effect on the tone? A negative effect that is, and I wont be getting the full tone i should be?

Re: HELP!!!! Quick Pleeease! I'm Right In The Middle of This PU Swap

I's still ike to know if the metal nuts I put on the pu's is going to make any tonal changes. I've searched the forums for "body mounting" and I've found nothing about tele's.

Could someone please tell me how to body mount the APTR-1 in a tele (neck)? Or have a link with the process somewhere

The pu route is about 3/4" deep and is not a single pu route. It's one big squre/rectangular route that houses the neck and middle(strat) pu....again its a MIM 04 Fender Nashville tele.

The guitar is still torn apart because I have a new APII strat neck pu coming tomorrow to replace the texmex strat pu that's in there now.

If you body mount a tele neck pu what do you do about the neck mounting screw holes in the pickguard? Time for a new pickguard?

Thanks SPhj for trying to help me sort this out

Re: HELP!!!! Quick Pleeease! I'm Right In The Middle of This PU Swap

I'd just mount it to the pickguard.

Body mounting is for the birds.

No way to adjust pickup height after the fact w/o taking the whole damn thing apart.

You can enlarge the mounting holes in the pickup without fear... no biggie.

It's FAR easier to do when the pickup is loose, away from the guard.

Just screw the screws (carefully!!!) into the pickup until they go through.

I usually leave the pickup on the bench & kinda clamp it down flat while I turn the screws in.
