Help recommend beginner left hand guitar

My 6 Y/O son would like a guitar for Christmas. He's been really into it for a while now. Unfortunately for me, he's left handed and can't play any of mine. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good reasonably priced left handed guitar? Around $250 range. Don't want to buy a total piece of ****, as if he loses interest, I can sell it. If he keeps interest, he'll be able to use it for a while before upgrading. I was looking at the Ibanez GRX20L, or a Mexican Fender strat. Thoughts?

I'd recommend you start him learning righty - if he were to get really serious about this and move up to an intermediate guitar there is a limit to what's available for a left handed player. Might save yourself some money in the long run getting him to learn on one of yours, not to mention you could also get to check out his future "investments"...

Re: Help recommend beginner left hand guitar

Im sorry but forcing a lefty to play right to save money and have more guitars available is THE WORST IDEA EVER...that could work out but more than likely he'll feel pressure to do something thats not natural for him and never get anywhere with it!

Those MIM Strats you're looing at are the ticket...they are plenty good enough out of the box, if he starts to get somewhere with it they leave room for improvement with new pickups and such later on if he stays with it long enough. Thats your best bet IMO...

there is a shop that is the largest lefty guitar dealer in the world... look them up.

Ya can't go wrong with a mexi strat. I got mine when I was 14, still my number one.

Re: Help recommend beginner left hand guitar

I've seen many L/H guitarists play right handed guitars,
holding them upside down and just play like demons. I've asked why..."never learned any other way, was the only guitar I had". They're still playing left handed, reverse the chords & such. There are a lot of left-handed guitars available...but a lot more righties. I would buy a left handed guitar for him. try southpawguitars.com
where right handed guitars are 15% extra!

I'm sorry, too, man.....cos I'm lefty and I wish I'd NEVER learned lefty so i could have access to a lot of the cool axes righty's have. Had nothing to do with economics. I teach a few lefty's and I ask them to learn righty for the reason I've just stated.
