Help : Seymour Duncan Pickup Covers won't fit ! (Included some pictures for help)

Hey,

As the title says. I just bought 2 official SD nickel covers for my Distortion Mayhem set (SH6B & SH6N). And I'm trying to to put the covers myself as I want to work a bit more on my guitars. The problem I'm having is that the covers won't fit, they leave a half inch (aprox) space between the pole pieces and the actual cover, and the covers seems to go all the way in.

So my question is, do I need to adjust the Pole Pieces of the pickups so they can go up all the way to the same level of the cover ?, or do I need to do something to the cover so it can fit a bit better ?, am I doing something wrong ?

Best Regards

No, you need to force them over the baseplate. You can run with lots of air under the cover.

So I need to push the covers harder so they can fit all the way in ?, am I missing space inside the cover and the pickup ?

Yep, definitely push it down so it rests on the bobbins. It will be snug, just ease it down. I'd suggest placing a piece of masking tape over the slugs to prevent unwanted feedback. Once on, raise the polepieces slightly and solder the inside edge of the cover to the baseplate on both sides and rock out

That is how my bridge 59 is in my strat right now. *embarrassed face* I just remember when I was putting the guitar together pushing down pretty hard and couldn't get it on all the way, it went a little further than yours do but it is just barely level with the cover. It sounded good as it was so I didn't mess with it anymore.

Not to hi jack but what would the sound differences be if I took it apart? Just a harder sound? It is in the pickguard and soldered to the cover now so I am pretty much thinking I'll leave it as is... hehe

Before you push put a little bit of wax on top of the rod bobbin. You'll melt it later to prevent feedback.

To take off the covers, I usually first take out the screws.

To put'em on again, I first apply a layer of low-tag paper painter's tape over the slugs and the space between bobbins, then I use two clamps to hold the cover in place, much like what's shown in this video at the end:

Once soldered, I put the screws in again last, starting by the first and the last.

This is my tried-and-true method.

The first thing you should do is learn to read a ruler/tape measure.

Then follow everyone's combined advice:

Take out the screws,
Put some wax or tape on the slug bobbin,
Push the cover all the way down (sometimes requires a bit of force),
Clamp the cover to the base plate (at this point, if you've used wax, heat the cover with a hair drier to melt the wax),
Solder the cover to the base plate (you need a good hot soldering iron here, at least 40 watts. A broad chisel point that holds alot of heat works best),
Put the screws back in.

Hey man,

Sorry, you're right I'm from Mexico so I was thinking on centimeters instead of inches and wrote "inch" by mistake

What I meant to say was 0.19 inches (half 1 cm)

Cheers

It's all cool. Get that thing together and start playing the heck out of 'em.

I'm wondering if I melt down a bit of unscented tea-light candles and use that wax for the pole pieces instead of painters frog tape it it would work ?? I'm having to bend one of my pickup covers to fit my bridge pearly gates too which is kind of a pain in the arse, looks like they Friday job constructed this one on a different back plate, I will post pictures to show you the difference in pickup mounting plates from my bridge and neck. kinda pissing me off.

If one of your PGs is the Trembucker model, it is supposed to have its polepieces spaced further apart, longer bobbins and a longer baseplate. Trembuckers require a differently sized metal cover.

You're absolutely right, I just found this info online and feel like a total blue waffle twat, (facepalm*) here is the difference:

1-15/16" pole piece spread (1.94"/49.21mm):
this vintage spacing fits our hum bucking pickup kits.

2-5/64" pole piece spread (2.08"/52.71mm): modern wider spacing for the bridge position. (this one i have to order in black from somewhere)

ugh, now more waiting for parts to arrive. I'm still in question about the waxing of the poles using those unscented tea-light candles tho??

If you securely clamp the cover applying the low tag paper tape over the slugs before soldering the cover, you won't need to wax anything.

Look at post #7 on this very thread.

Thanks Kojak, yeah I read that post about the painters tape. I have Frog Tape painters tape, (not sure if its low tag) but I would rather wax it to be safe. Waxing is the fail-safe industry standard after all, and i dont wanna have to screw around with solder if the frog tape doesn't work right.

Cheers!

Think of the tape as acting like a gasket. Clamping ensures the tightest possible fit. The tape deforms to fill the air gap. No air gap, no squeal.
