i ve met a friend of mine yesterday and he has a gibson les paul that he has bought second hand.On the headstock the guitar is writing STUDIO but the guitar has the binding on the body and the neck, it has dot inlays on the neck and the serial number is 80797616.Is this a les paul standard or a les paul studio?

It's an 87 Studio. The specs ranged widely over the years with the Studios and I wouldn't be suprised that an 87 had binding. The dot inlays and the headstock decal are a dead giveaway.

that guitar is an 87 Les Paul studio "standard". made from 84-88 .. kind of a bridge between the studio and the std that they made for a couple yrs.

they also made a studio "custom" in the early eighties that had binding nice inlays and was pimped out in gold. it may have been an alder body tho.

Not too common..

Re: help strange GIBSON

A buddy had a wacky early 90s Studio that had a 3 piece quilted top, ebony fretboard, gold hardware, regular inlays... I think it was just one of those pieces to use up wood that was either too small or not "good enough" for more "high end" guitars.

Re: help strange GIBSON

i've never seen one in person but i remember those from magazine ads in the mid 80's

Re: help strange GIBSON

I had a gibson les paul studio standard before it got stolen. great guitar, wish I had it back :( c'est la vie

Re: help strange GIBSON

Studio Standard would be my guess too...

They seemed like nice guitars IMO... the few I saw looked quite cool.

Wasn't Neil Youngs main Les Paul have alder in it? Maybe I am thinking of something else. I'm probably wrong.

Re: help strange GIBSON

Neil Youngs LP is a 56 Goldtop that has been repainted black.

Why are we pulling up 3 y/o threads?

I must be thinking of another guitar.

Wait! I remeber what I saw.... when I was like 13 I saw a guitar in a musicians friend magazine that was suppose to be "like Neil Young's" guitar. The main body wood was alder. I am shame faced.
