Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

What are the major sonical differences between these two? I can get a pretty good deal on both. The Studio I can get it new the Standard used but in great condition. Money difference between the two is only a couple of low hundreds (not bad at all). I am in a time frame, so I really need some opinions from anyone who has played them on a store, owned both of them, or is a fan of the LP.

Thanks for the help in advance...:D

I had a LP studio . I found it sonicly the same as the STD. It was a Mahogany
body w/t a Maple cap just like the STD. Just no binding . I jammed w/t a
guy who had a Deluxe, He was maveling at how well my studio sounded. (I
Didn't tell him that I had Duncan's in my studio) :laugh2: he he

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

Haven't found much difference between the Studio and the Standard. Seems to be all about binding. The big difference to me is the Standard/Studio and Custom.

Try them, and get the one you like more.

Studios a slightly thinner, and thus, tend to sound brighther and not as "deep" as standards. But the wood is the main factor, hence, you can get a crap sounding standard which could be beaten by many studios.

Try them!

Then you gotta try a reissue LP. R7's are great value for the money. Expensive I know, yet just for an additional $300, on top of the standard, you get so much more. Non-burst finishes, ok but I love goldtops anyway.

Don't misunderstand me. I love Les Pauls, but I'm more of a fan of the late 70's Standards & Customs than I am of the Studio versions. I think Standards & Customs both sound great as a general rule, but different. I haven't found as much of a difference between the Standards and the Studios. Does that make sense? Oh, and I live Goldtops, too, but they're still for the most part, Standards.

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

I like my studio. I tad lighter, less deep. Right on for me.

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

Just keep your eye on used Standards. Studios aren't bad guitars, but they don't have the prestige that Std's and Customs have. Sounds snobby, but it's true, plus Stds and Customs tend to look, play, and sound better IMO.

I've had about 6 Stds, 3 Customs and 2 Studios. There's a reason all the Studios got sold, and it had little to do with the binding. You get what you pay for....even more if you score a mint Std. for $200 more than a used Studio.

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

Tone doesn't sound as refined in the Studio. If you plan on replacing pick-ups anyway, then go for it. Otherwise the standard would be the axe of choice. I'd definitely pay the extra bucks for the standard, if you can swing it!

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

The difference is about $300 or so. I was planning in changing the pups anyway, on either one. I think both have 490R Alnico magnet humbucker and 498T Alnico magnet humbucker. My SG Standard has the same pups though, which I am considering changing pretty soon. I wish I could test both of them before buying but I can't as it is an online sale. That's why I need a lot of feedback from you guys. Also any thoughts on the studio smartwood?

That's cool wıth me! In fact I think ebony fretboard is what makes them different ( I mean custom is a custom shop item so the fair comparison would be against R7's both loaded with the same pickups). Rosewood is what I like.

Unless the standard has money back guarantee, don't buy it. Maybe the reason why it is not that expensive is because it does not sound that good!

For example I would not let go of my 95 LP standard even for $2000 cash. The reason is that it sounds good (way better than my ex-01R8) and that presents a serious replacement cost for me.

Hence, it is not a bad idea to get it, compare it (plugged and non-plugged) to standards and classics in guitar shops close by. See how it does, and if you are not satisfied send it back.

I don't think I'll be able to return the standard. Is a 1994 and there is a disclaimer that says all sales are final on used guitars. There is no way I can test either one before buying. I have played some at a store near by, but that doesn't mean I'll get an equal sounding guitar.....I bought my SG Standard the same way (online), but I have to say I was lucky that I got one that felt good when played. On the other hand, last year I bought an LP copy from a store and had to replace it twice because of cosmetic problems and sound issues.... :blackeye:

Then I have to tell you that I would not buy that standard if I were you.

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

I've only purchased 2 guitars in my life that I didn't play beforehand. One was an Ovation acoustic and it was just too good of a deal to pass up. It's been played a LOT. The other was my ES-135, which is a very, very nice instrument that I've put a lot of additional money into to make it into "my" guitar (frets, etc), but I haven't bonded with it the way that I have with some of my other instruments (namely my LP Custom and my Bastardcaster Tele). That said, I guess I'd still put a '95 Standard over a new Studio. Call me fickle!

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

Don't they have different pup's also? I've always been a Fender dude myself. Would love to have an LP oneday when I can afford it (oh sure..keep dreaming).

Re: Help Time frame: How different is the LP studio from the Standard?

It varies from guitar to guitar, but just so you know, 94 was a great year for the wood on most guitars. The 90's, in general, seemed to be great for most companies.

Just like Dr. Barlo said, there's typical Standards that you wouldn't even trade for a Historic. IMO, it has a little bit to do with the price, but not always the rule.
Since Standards sell for $2000, it's nice to see them for as low as $1100 used. If the pictures online show every indication that the guitar was a 'babied' under the bed type guitar, you're generally safe in buying it. If it looks like a player's guitar, I normally pass, just to avoid any disappointment. A guitar that looks slightly worn in pictures is usually worse looking in person.

Actually the Standard looked very good in pictures, no scratches, or dents. But still that big disclaimer that says all sales are final...Then again that is the norm on used instruments any way. I have no problem buying it used though. I've bought plenty of used gear before some have been disappointing others have been great purchases....
