Help troubleshoot my P/U's

I replaced the bridge and middle p/u's with an invader and hotrails. After I got them in, they didn't hardly work. I lost about all output, then I lost all output. I bought a new 5 way selector switch, and I put it in today, all the pickups worked for about 3 minutes, now I'm loosing output from the bridge and middle p/u's, but the neck is fine. Could my soldering iron have damaged the pickups or possibly the wires??? It's only a 25w iron, and I used a heat sink most of the time................

THanx,

Could be a cold solder joint, or you've got the wires set up all out of whack. I'm pretty new to doing it myself, so the other guys on here are much better resources. Did you use the SD diagrams?

Re: Help troubleshoot my P/U's

I know electronics................The only thing that really makes sense is a cold joint or dammage to the compnet (pickup). THat's why I wondered if anyone else had ever dammaged a pickup with a 25 watt iron.

Maybe your batteries are dying (LOL! sorry, couldn't resist).

Was the soldering iron hot enough to quickly solder the joints, or did you have to sit there for a while until things got hot enough for the solder to melt?

You want a soldering iron hot enough to get in / get out quickly. I'd try to find a 35-50 watt iron.

If you lived by Cinci, I'd say bring it over and I'd take a look. My guess is cold solder joints, probably on the pots.

I don't see how you could damage the pickup because you are soldering the ends of the leads. You could damage the pots by having to let them sit there and heat up all day from the low wattage iron.

dude i had a custom or distortion that did that exact same thing to me last year for a few weeks. soldering resoldering nothing would fix it it was driving me nuts. it would work for a few miutes or even days then just sh*t the bed. i finally exchanged it and it ended up being the pickup.
