help with 1942 National pickup

The pickup on my 1942 National New Yorker, Memphis Minnie model, has always sounded fantastic but I've been noticing that the high E and low E strings ring much louder than the rest. I really started noticing it after putting a set of Thomastik-Infield flatwounds on. I thought it was the strings but I swapped them for another set of the same gauge but cheaper over the counter strings and had the same results, actually the E strings were way LOUDER. The other strings have not gotten quieter just the Es got way louder. The poles are all the way as deep into the pickup they can go and brought all the other strings polls out. I've done a lot of troubleshooting already. This is the only guitar that sounds like this so it's not the amp. Also tried lowering, raising, centering, uncentering the bridge. I had asked someone and they told me the pickup needs to be rewound. I am hesitant to replace any of the pickup's parts because the quality of older metals is much higher (the purity being higher) and I don't want to compromise the pickup's sound or integrity if I don't need to. Is there anything I can do to try and balance the string volume better or is it time to get it rewound?

You can always send the pickup in to Derek or MJ to have it restored. They do great work and will maintain as much of the original materials as possible.

Maybe it's just a setup issue. Have you had a full setup and fret dressing done recently?
