Help with 57s middle position volume

So I bought some 57s 4 conductor and installed them in my epi lp. I wired black and bare wire together as ground to pot. Soldered White and green and taped them off. Red to control

They sound great but the volume drop and punch in middle position is very noticeable. When I have the volume wide open you can really tell it drops. In order to get some volume back in middle I need to back off the volume just a bit. The research I have found suggest I have the wires reversed????

Any advice? Thanks

Re: Help with 57s middle position volume

Oh one more thing the fella I bought them said this

"They are four conductor, I did notice the bridge one was wired backwards into the board w ith the white and green being used instead of the red and black like the normal Gibson wiring. I'm not sure if this was standard in the guitars with a circuit board or someone just wired this one funny. "

He mentioned this would only affect the wiring if I was going coil tapping.

But I am thinking the bridge is backwards regardless?

Re: Help with 57s middle position volume

Have you checked the Gibson color codes? I have the Duncan code permanently memorized, but have to check for other brands. It seems that PU manufacturers try to have unique color codes, for whatever reason.

If you have the colors right, then it's just the effect of the PU's being linked together in parallel. To get more volume in the middle position, have you tried dialing one down a little? That reduces some of the parallel effect. I wire my guitars for independent volume controls (which is just changing which lugs the wires go to, really easy), and that way in the middle position I can dial down either PU as much as I want, without the volume for both going down, which makes the middle position infinitely more versatile.

Re: Help with 57s middle position volume

what you are describing is two pups out of phase. when you roll the volume back a little you get a much more usable tone.

red - hot
white/green - series link
black/bare - ground

for both pups and youll be fine

Yep checked the Gibson schematic on these and wired them like Jeremy suggested. I will open her up and double check again.

Re: Help with 57s middle position volume

All fixed. The bridge pickup is wired backwards. Neck is red and black for ground. The bridge on this is green and white. Now switching between pickup positions I don't have a crazy loss on volume in middle. Thx for the input.
