Help with Amp Selection

Hi guys I was needing some recommendations for an amp that gives good thrash distortion but won't get me booted out of the house. I've got a 5150 head and I love the tone but it's just to freakin loud for practice. I need to find a good middle ground of low practice volumes and and good gig volume. Versatility(cleans) arent a factor since I mostly play thrash. Thanks

Re: Help with Amp Selection

Keep your 5150.

Get a practice amp.

I'd suggest a low watt VOX Valvetronix, Marshall Valvestate or Line 6 Spyder II. Both sound good at low volumes, but they'll turn to garbage at gig levels, which is why you'll still want that 5150.

Re: Help with Amp Selection

I'd suggest spending around $400, and get a Vox Valvetronix AD60 head. Out of all the modeling amps, this one has the most control over the gain structure, since it has OD pedal models in front of the amp models. Plus, it has a variable wattage control on the back and a volume for your headphones and recording output. Since it has that small 12AX7 power section feeding a SS power section, it also has the best tube feel under your fingers. If you keep your 5150's cabinet at home, simply use this head on top of it. Modeling amp combos normally suffer from cheap cabinets, but not if you're using a nice, expensive cab. Trying one in the store usually gives you a basic idea of how it sounds, but taking one home and dialing it in, is where it starts to sound great.
Plus, the Vox is laid out so a caveman could use it. Everything is knobs, not LCD displays. It wouldn't surprise me if you started to like the gain on the Vox more than the 5150!

Re: Help with Amp Selection

is the 5150 combo that much different volumewise? I've heard they are loud as hell. I just need something to quell the complaints of my fellow residents cause if I hear one more person bitch at me about my practicing...i'm gonna kill :banghead:
