I have a Tb5 custom and it's too bright for me! I though of replacing the mag with an alnico 8 but them I read about the 59 hybrids.

Problem is ,I am terrible with electronics and have a busy schedule.
Would anyone mod two pickups for me for a fee?

I would GREATLY appreciate the help!!!!!

Thanks!

Jeremy

welcome to the forum!!

i dont think the hybrid will be what you want. is the output about right? i might try an alnico 4, more bottom less top end. the a8 wont change it all that much, itll still be pretty bright.

what type of guitar is this? what style of music do you play? what other gear do you use?

Re: Help with custom/59 hybrid!

I like the output of the custom, its just not warm enough. This is an alder strat.
I use a splawn pro mod with 6550 tubes and I play mostly hard rock. I favor the vintage tones of the 70's and 80's though over the bogner/diezel sounds popular today. It still has to sound heavy though.

If I sacrificed just a hair of output to get a warmer tone I think that would be ok. So that's what attracted me to the hybrid. Im a big evh tone fan too, although our music is heavier.

I tried a buddy's les paul with a d-sonic through my amp and I liked that quite a bit. Its about 11k with two mismatched coils!

I am installing a rio grande bbq bucker this week and I will see how that goes. Its alnico 5 ,about 13.5 k.

I just want to salvage the custom ,instead of selling it.

if that doesn't work out and you end up deciding to buy a new pickup, check out jon moore pickups at tonefordays.com

He makes a similar hybrid pickup, he hand winds them to your specs... prices are very reasonable.
I have one on the way...

Re: Help with custom/59 hybrid!

You know, I was actually checking out his Rogue humbucker.

Someone told me that they replaced their custom ceramic with an alnico 8 and it gave it some extra punchand added low mid growl. He also said the highs were smoother but only a touch.

I read on here people having similar experiences with the distortion...they are calling it a distortion 8. 44 coils with an alnico 8.

So here's a nutty idea:

What if I combined one coil from the custom (43) and a coil from the distortion or jb(44) with a powerful alnico 8?

I actually had a distortion awhile back and I kinda liked it although it was a tad compressed. I do like hot pickups too , as well as medium gain pickups.

The Jb I had yrs back and I didnt like the spike. It was weird to my ears.

So, am I crazy?
I know I'm not feeling the custom, I do like the distortion.
If it works ,I might just end up with two hot pickups that I like.

I might like the 59/custom, but I may just have to run the amp hotter.Or, maybe the jb/custom (A5) would work better?

I guess the good thing is the magnets arent that expensive.
