Help with Gold Pole Pieces

Hey guys,

I want to throw some gold pole pieces onto my JB and 59 thats in my LP. Which ones should I get? I don't know which dimensions I need, but I heard that Duncan pole pieces are kinda weird in dimensions.

Will they change the tone of the pickup? I heard something about hex screws making the bass tighter and treble airier. What kind of screws are already in there?

Thanks!

Weird dimensions? Not as I recall. The only unique thing about them I remember is that they are self-tapping.

But any standard 5-40 polepiece will work.

As far as chaning the tone, unlikely there will be anything noticeable. But there are different alloys that can slightly brighten or darken the tone. 1018 is the most commonly used alloy.

Just a heads up...WD got a bad batch of gold polepieces a couple years ago. They may have gone through them by now and these may be fine, but they had a weird head shape and wide screw slot...they were really bad.

They were ordered in bulk by a pickup winder but were rejected because of the flaw...WD bought them.

I'd check with Addiction FX or Mojo Musical Supply. They tend to have good quality stuff (although I've never gotten gold from them).

Mojo has provided nothing but good stuff and good service to me so far. I wish their selection of magnets was greater, but for the standard stuff, I'd go there.

These are my modified Explorer pickups (A5 496R and A3 500T), done with Mojotone parts (covers, slugs, and reproduction gold screws):

Yep...I should have given them props in my post as well. I've been very happy with Mojo. Those guys are great.

as far as the tone, not in my experience if changing out for the same time of pole pieces. I changed a pickup from all black poles pieces to all gold and cannot tell the difference.

also, if you are going to gold, are you also considering additional gold hardware to finish it out? gold adj screws, gold mounting ring screws, etc.?

to be honest i hadn't even thought about that, or noticed that i'd need to do that. I'll check later on, and if appropriate ill do it.
