Help with H-S Combo

Hey what's up!

I'm looking for a Duncan single coil sized humbucker for the neck that will match up with an Alternative 8.

Specs:
6 string
Neck thru
24 fret
swamp ash wings
5 piece maple purple heart neck
swamp ash top
Ebony board
Floating trem (no locking nut)
Standard Tuning

Thanks!

Re: Help with H-S Combo

The two suggestions above would have been my first picks, as well...Quarter Pounder or Hot Rails neck

Thanks, guys!

I'm not a huge fan of the Hot Rails. The Quarter Pound would be more like it. Do you get hum with that pup?

What about Cool Rails? I have one paired with a Custom Shop modified IM1, and it's a pretty nice pairing.

Cool Rails is great in the neck of my Charvel Model 4 mutt:

It's currently paired with a Custom Custom, but I've had a '59, Custom 5, Invader, and Custom in there previously.

Re: Help with H-S Combo

The Vintage isn't as powerful, and is EQd more toward the low mids, where as the Hot Stack is hotter, and has more upper mids and highs.

Both descriptions sound good to me. Do they both have that "single coil tone"? I don't want it too hot where it's just about a humbucker.

I've tried the hot rails. They're good but not what I'm looking for.

How does that compare to the Hot Stack Strat Neck?

Its a pickup you dont hear talked about much but one I quite like. Its loud enough to keep up. Tonally its pretty even. It does cleans and can push well. It doesnt sound like a full on humbucker but doesnt sound like a vintage strat single either. the bottom is much firmer and the highs pulled back.

They are both darker, thicker single coils. You won't mistake them for a 50s Fender pickup, but it sounds closer to that 50s fender than it does a PAF.

I have a Vintage Hot Stack in an HS Strat with Screamin Demon bridge. I had to lower the Vintage Hot Stack more than expected to not overpower the Screamin Demon, which I also put very close to the strings to balance the volume. Vintage Hot Stack is mainly an overwound "traditional" bridge pickup. For comparison, assuming STK-S4 is 8.5K and SSL-1 is 6.5K, STK-S7 11.9K would be around 9.9K without dummy coil. It's a vintage single coil sound on steroid, but since it's designed for bridge, it has a bit more bass than usual neck pickup. I think it would be a perfect match in bridge position with Classic Stack in neck and middle.
Since the Alternative 8 seems to have some bass (according to SD tone chart) it might be a good match.
