Help with installing Tune-o-matic bridge

I'm putting one on my Tele (I'll tell you more about it later).
So what is the correct way to mount one on?!! I mean, which way should the saddles angle down toward? The inside, or outside?

So which side of the guitar should the screws face? If I turn the bridge so that the screws face IN toward the neck, the saddles will slant down toward the BACK. But it might be harder to intonate because of where the pick-up is.

If I face the screws out, it will be easier to move the saddles back and forth for intonation (since there will be more room). But then the saddles will slant down toward the NECK, and it appears as though the strings won't slip onto the saddles easily, and instead slip off of the slit on the saddles. Thanks.

Re: Help with installing Tune-o-matic bridge

One question, was this guitar originally designed for a Tuneomatic bridge? Because if not, you'll need to do one of two things for it to work if you haven't already...either route the neck pocket for a 10 degree angle, or recess the bridge into the body to create the angle.

Re: Help with installing Tune-o-matic bridge

The guitar was not designed for the Tune-o-matic bridge. But instead of digging the bridge into the body, I took my dremel tool and filed the sides underneath the tune-o-matic to make it FLATTER. Then, instead of mounting it over the posts, I just screwed the bridge directly onto the body from the top. And it looks GOOD!!

Re: Help with installing Tune-o-matic bridge

will you be able to adjust the height of the bridge?

Re: Help with installing Tune-o-matic bridge

by default, the screws are suppose to face towards the neck. i believe the saddles are removable. that said, i reckon you can turn the bridge around and have the screws face the butt, remove the saddles and reinstall them the way you like it to work.

Have you tried setting up the guitar and intonating it yet?

What worries me is the height adjustment. :blackeye:

Re: Help with installing Tune-o-matic bridge

you may have it looking right but that doesnt mean it is going to sound right... those adjustable posts are adjustable for a reason...

Re: Help with installing Tune-o-matic bridge

also, did you angle the bass side down 1/16
youneed to do that to compensate for the short tavel of the saddles during intonation
though th need to do this decreases as the scale length increases -i.e. you need to do this less on a tele scale than a gibson scale

Good point, I forgot about that.

Your description is a little confusing to me, as I don't have my Hamer with me at the moment to look at the bridge, but can you fully adjust the bridge and tailpiece? If not, you might want to think about having this done properly by a good luthier who has the proper tools to route the neck pocket for a TOM bridge. It's not really a good idea to ghetto-rig something like this.
