Help with my JB Jr......

Boleslaw Gers 666

I just got a neck JB Jr. for my strat because Jannick Gers uses it. I realized while playing it that it sounds almost like a single coil, very bluesy sounding even with high gain. Could it make a difference that the polepieces are very very low in the pickup, or why am i getting this tone out of my American Strat with same fretboard wood (rosewood) as Gers and everything? I thought this pickup was hotter, not single coil sounding. Any ideas on how to fix it so i have Gers' tone?

Re: Help with my JB Jr......

Have you checked that you haven't wired it to split or similar?

I have a JB Jr in the bridge of a strat and it sounds beefier than a traditional single coil. I also got it because the Maiden guys use it ;)

Re: Help with my JB Jr......

I've hade a JB jr in my strat It most certainly has the growl of a
humbucker. No mistakeing it for a single coil. You need to double
check your wiring !! You may have coil tapped it by mistake or
wired it Backwards ( Out of phase) The red and white should be
soldered together and be wraped w/t electricial tape Cuz' if left open
and it touches ground your coils will be split. :)

Re: Help with my JB Jr......

Its wired correctly. I raised the polepieces and lowered the pickup and that helped with the soloing tone but powerchords are not as crisp and are muddier than when Janick plays..... i need a new amp anyway.

Re: Help with my JB Jr......

make an arch with the polepieces. the JB will sound a bit muddy in the neck, but the single coil character it has will negate that a bit. but it's a hot pup so you should leave it at about half height.. better yet, play with the height a bit.. you always need to find the sweet spot for any pup imo

the magic behind the sound of maiden are pretty much their amps. marshall cranked to 13. very middy setup. try rolling off the bass on the amp to 4 and up the mids, leave the trebble at about half way. if you're playing on the amps gain channel, crank it, if it's too heavy roll it off gradually till it sounds right.
if you've got a pedal, do it the same way. if you got an EQ on the pedal, turn the heights to full and then roll them off till the gain wont sound 'raspy' anymore. put the bass somewhere around half and 3/4.

helped me nail the perfect donnington tone with my old valvestate 40 and the ibanez smash box (man i miss that amp ..)

also, not trying to be nitpicky, but you got a mistake in your sig... it's not To save MY from myself, it's to save ME from myself =)
