Alright guys, I've come to the crushing realization that I'm not gonna' be jammin' out with my new 5150 halfstack for the next 2 years of my military adventure, so I want a good modeler.

Which modeler do you like and why? What are your experiences with that modeler? Where do you think it excels, effects or amp models?

The tone of the amp models is what's important to me. I need high gain amp models that breathe, that sound open, and articulate. I need easily tweakable settings so I can plug and play. Some sort of sampling/looper thing would be nice, so I could harmonize with myself.

What I DONT need are a million effects, amp models, etc. I won't be using it with a computer, or MIDI, strictly as a stand alone unit into some headphones or a transparent amp.

The Behringer (Pod clone) for a 1/4 of the price !

Serious good value for $100.00 !!!

I DO NOT LIKE MODELERS, BUT FOR $100.00 I'll GET ONE, JUST IN CASE, YOU KNOW !

Ermmm, hold on, i think i miss-read your question !

You want one of those big floor-based thing'ys ?

WHY ?

EDIT :

My cousin had a Boss ME 50 - i was not too fond of it, 'cause even to my ears everything sounded like boss FX, and not always the things they were s'posed to replicate !

That same cousin, is now 20y old, and has :

RG121 Prestige -->TS9 -->TS9 -->10Band EQ -->5150 Combo (60W, 2x12)

I say go with a POD. Very useable practice tones, since like you said, you won't be needing that 5150! Just be sure to use some good quality headphones that can let more of the frequencies through.

Please, whatever you do, don't buy the Behringer. Ethical reasons aside, almost every piece of Behringer gear I've encountered has produced an unreasonable amount of noise and/or had other reliability concerns. There's a reason it only costs $100. You get what you pay for.

The Pod XT is the definitive modeller for good reason. It sounds great, is ultra tweakable, has unparalleled computer support, and is built very well. Mine is the core of my rig, both studio and live, and I have had nothing but good experiences.

Re: Here we go again: Which modeler?

+1 about that Behringer rant.

Pedals, V-amps, or full Behringer amps. I've seen them all die.

So yeah... DON'T.

Re: Here we go again: Which modeler?

the Boss GT series is great, but be prepared for tweaking...The PODs sound good out of the box but you can't edit the sounds as much. Don't give up on PC editing...it is a lot easier than bending over a small LCD display. All of my gear is PC editable, and I won't buy anything else that isnt.

Re: Here we go again: Which modeler?

Hear them before buying, seriously. I owned a POD for a while, but ended up taking it back due to this "plasticy" sound that I couldn't get over. I played with the XT, and it sounded better, but I still heard that similar quality.

The Boss GT series is good, IMO, and I agree with Mincer, they do need tweaking to get the sounds good, but it's in there. I wish I could remember the person who did the clips on their GT-8, and it sounded excellent. I have a GT-6, and I am very pleased with it.

I hear the Vox Tonelab stuff is really the way to go from many that have owned all of them, but I cannot confirm for my own opinion, since I haven't owned one yet.

Re: Here we go again: Which modeler?

I had the Behringers for awhile, both the V-Amp Pro and V-Amp Pro for Bass.

They were nice but I found that the sounds for guitar were very "dark" overall and at times I just couldn't get that out of the different tones. Additionally the software for them wasn't all that great either. The thing that clinched it was that there was nowhere near the community to support it.

I unloaded mine and got a PodXT and have been very happy with it. It's great for practicing and just messing with different sounds and experimenting. I bought the Bass Models pack, which is decent, and will probably plunk down the cash for the other expansion packs in due time. Line 6 does a fantastic job of supporting the software and the community is fantastic. I do find that the patches it came with tend to be a little over tthe top at times but I have to admit that once I figured out how to dial up a Plexi head and 4 x 12 cab I was VERY pleased with the results.

Tomorrow night I'm bringing it to a second audition for a band. Should be interesting.

Re: Here we go again: Which modeler?

I've been very happy with my GT-6. I recorded all the clips in my sig with it, except the JCM800 clips. I don't have a ton of patience for tweaking, but it's easy enough to tweak the standard tones and save them as your own. There is a lot more in there, I'm just too lazy to get them out quite frankly.
