Hex, Slug, & Slotted Screw Differences in a JB???

What's up guys? I've done some searching here, and found that these three different screw types make a difference in tone. Can anyone explain what these differences are please?

I have a JB in an old Yamaha RGX1220. Alder Body, Mahogany/Maple Neck. Through Construction.

The JB sounds quite good in this guitar. Except for the Muted Chugging on the Low E string. It's not as loose, and tubby as other guitars I've heard it in. But it's not quite as percussive as I'd like. Especially in comparison to a C5 I tried. That thing has a TIGHT, and percussive low end. But it's also fairly bland to me, in comparison. I've tried a bunch of other pickups, and I keep coming back to the JB. It's just that damn low end, that's not percussive enough!

Would a change of screw help me? I was thinking maybe just change the screws on the Low strings, or maybe even just the low E.

Hex's maybe? Would this make a noticeable difference? What about the Slugs? Can I change those too? If so, how do I remove them?
Two Hex's under the Low E would work better than one, no?

If you can't remove the Slugs, I DO have a second JB that I can swap coils with.

Hex screws out of a Demon tightened up a JB I used to have quite a bit.

Did you just change the top two screws or did you change all of them? I have some hex screws from the original pickup in my Ibanez - they should fit right?

I changed all 6. I used the hex's from a Screamin Demon. Try the Ibby screws, they might work.

What kind of screws would I need for the JB? Hex Set Screws right?
I think I read somewhere in the forum, that I'll need 5-40 size. So I went to Ace's Hardware, Sears Hardware, and Home Depot looking for them. The closest I found was 5-12 Hex Set Screws at Home Depot. But they are too fat, and won't fit the JB. Are these a different type of screw? Metric?

Anyone know where I can buy ones that will fit?
