Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

I'm thinking of buying A Dean USA Custom Shop VMNT Angel Of Deth, I had some PRS, Strats and Les Pauls but I think Flying V shaped guitars are most comfortable while playing sitted or standing.

I have Jackson Corey Beaulieu Signature KV6, it is super great guitar I love it and I think I'm gonna stick to V guitars.

I used a Korean made Dean guitar, it was pretty nice so I want to get a Dean guitar...may be.

There's a guy selling Dean Custom Shop VMNT Angel Of Deth made in 2007, looks super nice I love it

But there are rumors saying Dean Custom Shop guitars are awful, I have read this:

http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/sevenstring-guitars/231443-show-me-your-dean-custom-shop-guitar.html

Their reputations are pretty bad, but some saying made in USA are pretty good. Not sure if 2700 dollars is worth paying for this guitar

Well, I do NOT have any experience with custom shop Deans BUT...if your going for this I would definitely make sure you play it first.

I've heard horror stories from their custom shop too (like how it's not really a 'true' custom shop as they have so many limitations)...and honestly, the only dean I've picked up and liked was an old ML from somewhere in the 80's a local shop owner used to have.

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

I have experience with the older US Masters built versions. A custom shop time capsule ml.

Barney was a fantastic player. Good quality wood. Pretty gutar. It had a few cosmetic issues and technical issues a $3600 guitar shouldn't have had. It wasnt as well done as my Hamer USA or PRS USA guitars. IMO, it was overpriced by a grand to $1200 or so. . But I wanted it and pony'd up the cash.

Nowadays I would buy used and let someone else take the massive hit.

Summary- nice guitars, Dean USA thinks a little too highly of themselves when it comes to pricing/value.

OMG a VMNT. I laugh every time I see that thing. Fins and dots. Hilarious.

Get a USA Jackson KV2T if you need the non-Floyded bridge, otherwise a KV1 if you like the thin neck.

Or get a Jackson Warrior. Much more comfortable when sitting than a V.

From the linked 7string thread lmfao

The Custom Shop isn't open to living people. That's why you see so few Custom Deans out there.

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

Deans quality is so hit and miss that I would probably pass on one if it was me.
I almost bought a DCR a couple of years ago but passed after all of the bad reviews I read.

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

I've owned lots of deans.... Well maybe 10 or so. Every one has been spot on quality wise.
All have been players.

The custom shop blue V I own isn't USA custom shop, it was made overseas in their "custom shop run".... It's not perfect, the blue side dots turned out green, and the nut was sub-par.
I know that may not be much help to you, but I've always rather enjoyed my Deans.
Fwiw.

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

The 2007s are US Masters made. Stout guitars. US Masters made the bodies up to paints , electronics, and hardware installation. Pat Baker was/is in charge of the US Custom shop and he does oversee some great guys that have been there for years. I had a 2003 Z Time Capsule that I sold to a guy who "had to have it" and I still have a Z Pro that were US Masters built and fit the bill well. If you can play it and feel it that is the test. Not how much or how little I like my own experiances with a Dean guitar.

Be sure to get the Strap pieces that go with the Dunlop Straplock buttons for the strap that come standard on those. They are the kind that are sunk into the guitar.

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

I really like my Dean VMNT. But it's not near the guitar you are looking for. Made in China, bolt on neck, passive pickups. Still a Mustaine signature, but the lowest model.

Still, the neck is comfortable and stays straight, and I'm really happy with the tone. I splashed some custom paint on it. If I end up keeping it, I'll upgrade to the Mustaine active pickups.

Like everyone says, play it. The Angel of Death is a cool looking axe! Just because the quality control can be "hit and miss" doesn't mean this particular guitar isn't a "hit".

Good luck

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

I love the "Angel of Deth" theme, but there's no way I'd buy a U.S. Custom Shop version for $2700 when I can get the same features, the same finish and the same build quality on the import version for $850 or less new.

Save the custom shop for when you want something truly "custom"

Two Korean Caddy's, a Custom 350. All for less than 3 Bills. Silverburst Caddy is a 2003 Custom Korean run.

I play the hell out of them. Working man guitars with Duncans in them.

That AOD V is probably awesome. I really like the Mustaine V designs. That is a top end one. Value? I'd say 750- or so. But I wouldn't pay more than 1k for it.

As said - not a real custom per se….

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

TBH, you could buy a new Mustaine V for that coin. Especially with dings in it. I saw you post at Dean with bigger pictures and that was never Dave's. He never sells anything without a COA or something. He charges those kind of prices and MORE though when he does sell stuff.

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

Never owned a CS Dean either. Came close a couple of times, but as stated above, they seem to be QUITE PRICEY! I hadnt heard these bad things, but again, not alot of research into it. They do make some nice playing imports and I once owned a limited run Soltero that I HATE myself for selling. Gorgeous guitar and great player..

Re: Hey guys, how do you think about Dean Custom Shop Guitars???

I actually like the Fins and Dots inlays, but ain't no way I've paying $2,700 for a Dean! For that money I'd be looking at Wayne Charvel for a custom build...

They've been hit and miss for me, more so than any other brand I've tried. I wanted to like Dean as aesthetically they've had some very cool looking guitars/finishes over the years, just was never impressed with them. Some like them–if you go for one, best of luck and hope its great.

2011 Custom Shop Tampa CNC'ed and hand built. I supplied the pickup. Korina with Ebony board. Real MOP dots. Tonepros bridge and Grover tuners.

2009 Custom shop one off P90 equipped Baby Z with shrimpfork headstock much less money, even new, than the Dave Mustaine you are looking at. I know, different guitar and everything, but just to tell you that it doesn't have to cost that much even new for a custom order. The Splittail was less too.
