If you learned on a classical guitar, you might be used to reaching upper frets by tucking your thumb in or letting it hang back, and not relying on it for leverage. He does this at about 2:50, although it sounds like he needs some practice. Check this out http://youtu.be/98y0Q7nLGWk?t=2m8s

I love to see out of the box mods that are well thought out. This one is IMO great (but not my coup of tea) and looks totally reversible.
Perhaps he should have modified the lower horn and neck joint of an early 60s Strat?:scratchch
