I stumbles accross these videos on youtube, Its a guy who makes custom pickups from scratch, he replicates all the fine details of the original p.a.f pickups, but he uses high end materials and excellent worksmanship.

heres a youtube video, just browse his other videos to hear his pickups in action. Im curious for a board member here to get a set and do a review just to see if they are any good, from the vids they sound pretty dahm good.

Just that the replica is very similar, but brighter. It makes me suspicious since other replicas tend to be darker / less jingle.

If you really want to get into the real fine points of tone a UTOOB clip is the LAST place you want to look...

If you dig the SD pickups thats great, Im sure they are good pickups but for my money nothing out there can top a set of Duncan Antiquities...except maybe my Duncan Pearly Gates!

I frequent the p'up makers forum, and Dave Stephens is an avid poster. He goes with the nick of "Possum".

He really made his homework to make those PAF replicas.

He's maybe not as well-known as Jason Lollar or Lindy Fralin, but he's definately up there, if you ask me.

Other excellent PAF makers are Jon Gundry (Throbak)...

... and Jim Rolph.

Rolph made the p'ups on Robben Ford's Sakashta!

Maybe what I'm going to say might be considered as blasphemy, but I think that today the quality of p'ups is far superior than in the "good ole days", and I think that some of today's PAF replicas actually sound BETTER than the ridiculously priced "originals". Not just because are "vintage" are "good".

Many original PAFs were taken out of their guitars and replaced by Di Marzio Super Distortion... if you know what I mean. Why the owners changed'em? Because they didn't satisfy their needs then, and I'm pretty sure many of those today droole over seeing a PAF on sale on E-bay for several thousend bucks!

Come on, people; let the flames get flying. I've got my Asbestos underware on!

HTH,

HTH,

I would tend to agree, just because a lot (if not all) vintage pickups were inconsistant, where as the modern day counterparts have 50+ years of research behind them to make them a lot more consistant. Most replica paf's were designed by using the best examples of mid/late 50's pafs.
