HFH and Full Shred Neck

I finally got around to trying a .047 capacitor inline with the pickups hot lead and then to the potentiometer to lessen the bass in my Les Paul neck. This is listed on the Duncan Blog as a good alternative to excessive bass. While it did lessen the bass a good amount, it dulled the response and picking dynamics to much. I also removed the .022 capacitor from the volume to the tone potentiometer and put a .015 in its place. That did more than I thought it would. I liked it better. Although, the tone pot under gain doesn't seem to effect it when rolled back, it is still noticeable when clean. It seems to have added brightness even when the volume is on 10.

I have been wondering if these changes would make a difference and I was pleasantly pleased with the .015 but not the .047 in series. I would eventually like to try a Lollar El Rayo. To much money for now.

Re: HFH and Full Shred Neck

Is your title suggesting that you have a full shred neck and a HFH in the bridge?

Re: HFH and Full Shred Neck

No, I have been going through different neck pickups. I have tried the above mentioned mods to both the HFH and the Full Shred Neck. So far the HFH is the brightest and tightest between a Jazz N, Full Shred N and the HFH. I mentioned some time back that I was going to try the capacitor changes to eliminate even more compression and bass from the neck position. The in-line .047 is mentioned on the Duncan Blog to filter out bass before it enters the circuit. Didn't work for me.

Re: HFH and Full Shred Neck

Do you want a pickup that is even brighter? What kind of sound are you going for?

The brightest, tightest neck pup I've heard is the D- Activator neck.

Re: HFH and Full Shred Neck

Les Pauls are difficult to find a neck pickup that balances output wise as well as balanced EQ. A 25.5 scale guitar built like a Les Paul doesnt have the same balance issues. It is a trade off for sure. I am looking for a neck humbucker that doesnt sound compressed and flubby when overdriven. I dont like a neck humbucker to sound like a Big Muff pedal is on. The HFH is close but still has to be careful with height adjustments and amp eq. My other guitar is a 1998 wolfgang and it doesnt suffer the same muddy neck. The Lollar EL Rayo is interesting but expensive. Just thought I would share my findings with the capacitor changes.

A Firebird neck pickup might do it. If you can't find what you want or some kind of single coil in a humbucker housing. You could always have the Custom Shop build it.
