Hi Gain Articulation?

Hey guys ,I am not new here but post very little. I plan on doing some new stuff ,(Dream Theater ,Rush and Kings X ) and I'd like to know what pups would suit those tones best. I'd like some articulation without mud but want some good hi gain as well. I currently have a sl2h stock pups(jb 59) .I'm getting another sl2h and curious if I should try something else for those tones. Thanks

Re: Hi Gain Articulation?

For good articulation with moderate output, I'd get a Jazz in the neck and a 59 in the bridge.

For a bit more punch, use a Pearly Gates in the neck and a Screamin Demon in the bridge.

If you do wanta bit more output, either a PGn/Custom combo or a Full Shred set would work.

Re: Hi Gain Articulation?

I agree fully with the jazz in the neck-
But we play a lot of rush, and I beleive the 59 would only be optimal for very, very early sound (Flybynight timeframe)- Lifeson worked very hard to clean up his sound allowign enharmonic passign tones and complex riffs to cut throught without the mud in this timeframe and never went back-

Some of this had to do with affect and amp techniques that got a cleaner and often chorsed top end while keeping the bottem much tighter-

As a result, unless you have a very bright guitar I would strongly suggest the JB for the bridge- 2112 to subdivisions, via limilight, it's by far the best rush sound I have ever had and this includes my prs and gibsons-

Re: Hi Gain Articulation?

So maybe I'll keep both axes with jb's. I was leaning towards the tb-6 for the Dream Theater stuff but I'll see how the jb sounds. Thanks

i think the TB-6 does it better than jb.I use it and i took it over jb.

Re: Hi Gain Articulation?

John Petrucci used to use a custom DiMarzio that was very much like the Steve's Special model with an Air Norton in the neck. Lately, he's been using the new DiMarzio D Sonic (installed with the pole pieces toward the bridge) and the Air Norton in the neck.

john petrucci's sound can never be defined with a pickup label or model ,since is over produced and have thousands of different amps , effects and settings.I just can say that the Duncan Distortion is enough clear and articulate the notes taht you play in ultra high gain settings.

Re: Hi Gain Articulation?

59's and Jazz's get muddy for me... I hate them!

I'd go with a Tone Zone/Air Norton or an 85/89. I don't think Duncans perform very well under hi-gain.

A full shred bridge and a jazz neck! Nuff said!

Big Plus 1 on the Full Shred bridge I get fairly close to Ty's tone with it
