Re: Hideous or has character

Why would you think that it's hideous?

Re: Hideous or has character

I would do that in a solid color cuz to me it looks like just a bland three piece top.
You could burst that but I would save that kind of work for a nicer top unless you're married to the bursted plain top look

Re: Hideous or has character

I would think it needs some more work to make a call on it. Right now, it could end up either way.

Re: Hideous or has character

Obviously needs work.

As a natural top? No, fail, wrong....

As a transparent burst? Maybe

As maybe a dark to darkish inside burst? Dark to green or dark to purple...sure

As a solid or graphic? Awesomeness in waiting!

Re: Hideous or has character

I'm guessing that it's had it's original finish removed and the OP is asking the question as to whether it's hideous or has character as is ...

Lime green with metallic sparkle and the titanium Floyd, maybe some EMGs and the cool Atari style killswitch yep
Turn it into a 80s glam/hair metal face melter.

Re: Hideous or has character

It's a Les Paul Studio someone removed the finish on. It's a very white maple cap, not quilted so that isn't an option. I wanted a transparent wood finish so I used some dye to give it a bit of an amber color in the center and it gets slightly darker around the perimeter. It looks more like a dirty brown to me, not really happy with the result. The solid mahogany looks great but I haven't figured out what to do with the maple. Maybe a cherry red stain would be better.

That pretty visible three-piece maple top doesn't bode well for other than a solid color, if you asked me.

Also, you DID notice that there are no frets on the guitar, isn't it? A pretty expensive job, if you don't know how to do it yourself.

Frets? I just take a tube bender and hold it in a fixed position with vice grips, run some fret wire through it to get the curve, and clamp them in the neck with rubber ended clamps. I then put some double backed tape on a level, put a sandpaper strip on it, level them out and then take my crowing tool to them. The fret ends take the most time. Not really that tough though.

Re: Hideous or has character

I've been to busy to make a lot of progress with this but what I've found is the maple won't take common stains like the Minwax you get at the hardware store. It just won't adsorb in nor does it dry hard and adhere like a paint. I could of course paint the maple, or I've found that dye mixed with isopropyl alcohol will work but you have to take some time to mix your colors.

Re: Hideous or has character

Paint it your favorite color. And it's not hideous, and has some character too.

Re: Hideous or has character

This is how it ended up. Sooo many mistakes, the most noticeable being the faux binding isn't uniform thickness. I also had to sand a lot of maple down because of water damage and it's a bit wavy in one place when you run you hand over it.

I have a pickguard with gold hardware but I'll probably leave it off. Not sure about the gold pickup covers I have. I also have gold locking straps for it.
