Hipshot Trilogy Bridges ... Anyone Have Any Experiences With Them ?

I remember when these came out in the mid-late 1980s, and always thought it would be ideal to have one on my Telecaster so that I could set it up to switch between, open E, open A and Standard tunings.

The fact that they're still available tells me they must work well, or at least would have been tweaked to ensure that they do the things they're supposed to do.

I'm also interested to know how much they may cause a neck to change with each tuning, and whether it would be better to replace a thinner neck with something with more wood, to cope with the various tensions caused by different tunings.

I may be in a situation where i need various tunings for slide playing, and initially thought about building a dedicated Tele for the Hipshot system. But then it occurred to me that my old 1974 Tele Custom has the (genuine) Widerange humbucker in the neck, and it was always an awesome guitar for slide work. So my thinking now is to fit it with the Trilogy bridge and see how it's reasonably slender neck handles the variations in tension, with the backup plan of fitting a heavier neck if the current one tends to shift around too much.

Has anyone got any experience(s) with these, on Strats or Teles ? Any useful bits of information you could share ?

I would be worried that changing from the vintage stamped steel bridge to the bulkier Hipshot assembly would alter the distinctive Telecaster sound too much.

Can't say I have ever used that bridge, but the other Hipshot products I have used were top notch.

Back in the '80s I had a Washburn Wonderbar vibrato sytem on there (flat-mount device, didn't need any body routing). It was a big mass of metal, and I remember it lost a very small amount of tone, probably mostly because of the strings no longer being anchored through the body. But it was a minor loss compared to having the vibrato available. However eventually i swapped back to a traditional bridge/ strings through body.

So i'd be prepared for any minor change in tone to create the tuning versatility i need (and the changes would be fully reversible). But this is something that i'd hoped any other Trilogy user out there might have experiences with that they could share.

And I have the same feeling as Ayrton mentions above about the quality ... forum member Will S-T has some Hipshot products and they are all excellent, very high standard. I have no doubt the Hipshot bridge systems are quality pieces of engineering.

I have Hipshot D-Tuner 'heads on some of my bass guitars. I like the functionality but, at the same time, I am convinced that it alters the tone of the E string on my EBMM Stingray.

Washburn Wonderbar vibrato system

Blasphemy.

A previous owner had installed one of those on my Squier JV '62 Stratocaster. The guitar still has two almighty screw holes right through it! Not so much Relic-ing, more like crucifixion.
