Well i'm in a dilemma...
planning to buy an american strat soon, but this mahogany bodied strat is calling my name.

Although I would really really appreciate a humbucker, I don't know if i should go with the traditional fender and go alder body with maple neck and s-s-s config. and then later get a jackson or ibanez for heavier playing.

but... NOTHING IS LIKE A STRAT!!! I think i'd rather play a strat with a humbucker than an ibanez with one.

anyone have any experiences with the mahogany bodied strats? what do you think?

Re: hmmm HSS or SSS..

Honestly, I have never played a mahogany Strat. Looking at your gear list, I'd suggest going for a regular alder Strat instead. Stay HSS as you were going to do, and change that awful Fender pickup for a nice mild-output Duncan, like a 59 or a PG. I find these work the best in Strats. I think if you had that and your Les Paul side by side, an alder Strat would compliment the LP a lot better.

Re: hmmm HSS or SSS..

The new American series Strats have S-1 switching systems so there's no reason to add on a coil split. You already get 10 tonal options from a 5-way switch which borders on overkill.

As for that guitar you mention, I haven't actually played it but I understand it's very nice. However it's supposed to be considerably darker sounding than an alder Strat. So that particular HSS will get you a nice, thick humbucker sound the single coil sound may suffer a bit. I have an AM DLX HSS alder Strat and in my opinion, the single coils really breathe in that guitar but the humbucker is rather ho-hum. I think that has more to do with the Fender pickup than the body wood though. Personally, I'd go with an alder HSS Strat. If I wanted a thicker humbucker tone in a mahogany SuperStrat I'd look into an HH Jackson. I wonder why Fender doesn't make a Mahogany HH Strat?

SSS. You've already got a Lester.

+1

The guitar you chose for a strat is better suited for a main guitar. It has a nice mix of tones.

If you 'd like a strat go all the way...

Unless of cource you are planning to make this your main axe...

Anyhow, I believe that guitar is one of the best bargains that Fender has to offer. Then comes the SD pup strat... Very nice too.

Re: hmmm HSS or SSS..

If you're gettin' a strat... Go S/S/S Someday down the road pick up a H/S/S as well...
