Hmmm...sh-6 in an SG....too bright?

Here's my predicament.

I love the Custom by itself in the Bridge. I love the sound of the distortion in the Neck. But they don't combine well in the middle. (I still have my LP by the way, just toying with the thought of an SG.)

You think the Distortion set combines for a nice clean tone in the middle position of an SG? Is it too bright for an SG bridge? Would I be better off with a Custom/59n combo?

What's the average velocity of a coconut carrying swallow?

A DD set would be cool, but I wold install coiltaps for both. African, or European swallow?

Do SGs have space in the control cavity for spst push-pull pots? Those I like.

I do beleive that the Stew Mac push-pull pots fit an SG cavity. I might be mistaken though. If they don't, you might try usng the tone pots as spin-a-split controls.

the stew-mac pots are too deep for the SG. IIRC, the pots are 1,3/8 inch and the cavity is 1 inch even.

If the body is as thick as a Les Paul body, you may need the longer shaft pots. Otherwise, you can use a standard shaft DPDT pot. I'm pretty sure the SPST pots are only available in a long shaft version, while the DPDT pots are only available in a standard sized version. Shameless plug...I have five of these for sale if you happen to need a a couple.

A Distortion set should sound killer in an SG. The combined tones are very useable.

I've never tried to put dpdt push/pulls in an SG, but I can see where you might run into problems. Wire the guitar master tone/volume and use the tone pots as spin-a-splits.

Im assuming a distortion would be real bright in the bridge of an sg considering it is very close to the bridge saddle all the pups ive tried in that position in my sg ive had to turn down the treble or lower the pickup height.
It may just be that my sg is fairly bright in that position, the neck position seems pretty bassy to me though.

To correct my previous comment, they require a 1,1/8 inch deep control cavity, and my SG is 1 inch even. So if you built your own SG body and either made the body 1/8 inch thicker, or made the wood between the front face of the guitar and the cavity thinner, or a combination of both methods, yes, you could.

I'll soon, in about two weeks install the SH6 & SH2 in my all mahogany Vintage VS6 SG. i want it to play heavy/thrash metal stuff in standard e. i have the Blackstar HT-5 Combo with extension cabinet. the question is, which volume pot would you reccomend me for Distortion in the bridge of SG ? and, will i need to turn volume pot down and trebles in my amp down, because of icepick, or there will be no icepick at all, even with 500k pot ? i am so exited, that will be my first high output straight to face metal pickup :fingersx:

Short story a DD Mayhem set in an SG would be killer! I'd go for the Trembucker Distortion in the bridge though as a standard spaced humbucker never lines up with the strings and I am OCD like that. I have had a DD in the bridge of my '86 SG Standard for about as long as that guitar has been new. The stock Gibson neck pickup was dark and wooly and had to go so I recently put in a 496R whick is what I would say is similar to a DD neck model. Much more useable neck position now even if the cleans arent as good as say a jazz or 59, but I prefer the ceramic in the 496R, yes even in the neck.

you'll be good to go as I had that DD in my SG for many years until they developed trembuckers. It sounds fine but the looks can get under your skin. My OCD dictated I had to get the TB6 as the unaligned poles of the SH6 standard spaced always bugged me.

Well i already have standard spaced humbucker, so i'll be installing that :fingersx:

Honestly, DD or Custom - the combo is just not gonna get all that great clean without some serious knob turning.

Those things are NOT intended for clean anything. And the middle will be a PITA.

The DD has too much mid IMO for a good clean.

IMO the distortion set would be your better bet for the desired middle position tones. Keeping in mind that the Distortion was not designed as a "clean" pup, you can get some pretty good clean sounds with the volume rolled down a bit.

As far as being bright...yes, it has some very bright highs, but the real beauty is in the rich, warm mids. I didn't much care for the shrillness of the highs in my LP type guitar (ceramic mag) and in an SG it will be even brighter, but an A2 made it wonderful. A UOA5 might be a reasonable compromise between the stock ceramic mag and the A2, however.

I think a distortion set in an SG would sound AWESOME...but for your coil split troubles. A push-pull pot won't fit on an SG, but DPDT Mini-Switches will.

Try what gibson use stock for their explorers, 300k pots
