Home Audio Experts.....need help with something.

My reciever/amp for my TV/stereo just died and turned into static.
Ironically, this week I brought my PA system home, which is a 1000W Carvin power amp and 2 Yamaha 15/horn cabs.

Is there any reason NOT to use a pro audio PA in place of a home theater system? I'd be modifying my TV to power amp cables, making them RCA - 1/4".
TV - Carvin power amp - 2 PA speakers. I wouldn't have EQ or the stereo anymore, just raw clean power. Will the sound be better or worse by using pro audio instead of home audio?

Not a clue Joe, but here's a bump and my opinion.

I think you'll miss the availability to eq at the lower levels you listen to home entertainment at. I know I really like to tweak the bass, treble and midrange frequencies to get the best balance between volume and voices when watching movies or sports.

The dad of one of my old girlfriends used a Yamaha power amp into a couple of PA cabs (horns & big ass woofers).....but he was also using a stereo reciever as a preamp and running that into a two channel EQ.

Off the top of my head I'd say it'll work fine, but whether you like the results or not will be left for you to decide.

PA speakers are meant to be loud and durable, the sound quality is less than desirable but depending on the quality of your speakers you had before they could be better.

Same goes with PA amps.

I like the mini-speakers of the home theater. I had a rack stereo system for a long time with humongous Cerwin Vega cabs. I like the space gained by ditching that equipment.

Re: Home Audio Experts.....need help with something.

why would you need to modify the TV? most TV have RCA lineouts that you can turn on or off, and and/or tunr the internal speaker on/off.

but it should work fine. just might now sound all that good.

good luck!!!!

PA is not quite as Hi-fi ...but it can work if you're not too picky. I had great experience with a pair of EV sx500's as L/R and Alesis monitor one's wired in series as center. I say hook up, listen...if it don't sound like crap....enjoy!

That's the first thing that came to my mind. I'm not sure how your system is set up, but obviously you'll lose any surround sound capabilities. If you used any digital audio inputs from DVD, CD, SAT, etc, to the receiver you'll probably lose those functions as well (short of using your TV as an analog receiver of sorts).

It'll work, GJ, but I wouldn't expect great performance from it.
