Hondo Deluxe 775

Hello again! I've found it to be time to restore the Hondo that I recently got and talked about in past threads. I've decided, unless someone comes up with something they think is better here and I agree with to just restore it to what it used to be. For right the very second, the first thing I was looking at was the bridge and I'm gonna get it replaced. Would this work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Fen...-Guitar-Tremolo-Bridge-Assembly-/311033845019

Thanks for any help and here are some pics of it if you didn't see them yet!

Re: Hondo Deluxe 775

Woops didn't see any posts this afternoon when I checked. Currently the guitar is at my neighbors and I unfortunately have to go to bed  so It'll have to be tomorrow when I measure it.

And, Kramersteen, that block of metal on that one looks identical to the one that was on the bridge that was in it. The one I posted has a weird looking block. Although I'd rather not spend that much but if the other one wont work then that's that.

Right, Sweet! Well bro you could just get baseplate, saddles, trem bar and new screws for it? haha hmmmmmmmmmmmmm You could always sandblast the baseplate if you really wanted to go the cheap.

if cheap is the word just get saddles, the rust on the baseplate adds character

Re: Hondo Deluxe 775

Don't waste your time and money on the crappy, thin block trem. You're much better off getting a GFS trem or a slightly cheaper option would be a MIM strat bridge with the fat zinc block. GFS being the better option...

Re: Hondo Deluxe 775

I'd go with the Guitar Fetish one, probably spend the extra $1 for the one with the brass block though

Re: Hondo Deluxe 775

Man, I lusted after one of these when I was looking for my first guitar. It was between one just like this, and a "Lotus" branded Explorer copy. (I ended up with an LP copy though) I played the one my local store had pretty much every day after school, until the guy got tired of us bugging him all the time...

Another vote for the GFS tremolo. THat era Hondo will always have cheap hardware. I started out on a HOndo when they were new guitars, it was cheap and crummy then, and being 30 years old won't help this any. Also, you probably won't be able to just put different saddles on this trem, because all of the Hondo bridges I've seen just LOOKED like what they were copying, but all the dimensions were off compared to "real" stuff. I've put the GFS bridges on all my parts-O-casters and they actually do improve the sound over the thin, crummy zinc blocks these came with. (Unless you're really unlucky and yours just has the C-shaped bent metal "block" like my Hondo strat did)
It looks like yours was wet at some point, it would be a good idea to replace all the metal stuff while you're in there, or at least give them a good soaking in WD40/machine oil. Oh and make sure the truss rod still works and isn't rusted together... ask me how I know this (I snapped off the adjustment nut trying to turn a rusted truss rod once)
But judging by how well your other guitar turned out, you'll do just fine on this one, too.

Re: Hondo Deluxe 775

keeping the cream stripes will be your biggest problem, from the last pic they seem to be painted, try wetsanding first if the damage to the finish isn't at the same paint layer of the stripes you will only need to clear coat it
