I'm actually quite happy with most aspects of the guitar, some of which I thought I'd hate like the new wider fretboard. It's a little off putting at first but I'm not really used to playing Gibson's anyway so the wide fingerboard & shorter scale are both things that took a little getting used to. Now that I have I appreciate both!
I also really like the stock P-90's! When I was watching the demo videos for the guitar I said "well those will be coming out" because they had this bright, shiny, nature to them? I thought I'd hate that tone but now that I've got the guitar in hand I really don't, actually quite the opposite! They are very percussive & they have a fair amount of snap in their backbone. This has become one of my favorite features of this little fiddle!!!
Now for the things that I don't like too much... Luckily I think with a little bit of money and elbow grease they can be addressed & fixed to my liking??? The Lighting Bolt Wraparound bridge is just that, a wraparound bridge & it performsas such! I had pretty much planned on swapping that out with something that can actually be intonated from the get go anyway, so it's really no surprise that I don't absolutely love it. I just ordered a Schaller Signum & it should arrive on Tuesday. As far as wraparound's go it doesn't get much better than the Signum IMHO!!!
Alright, the G-Force.... So I know these things are a improvement over the Mini-TunE but I think another 3-5 years of R&D are definitely in order before they start putting these on every single plank of wood with strings on it that they turn out? Mine actually works better than a lot them that I've seen, which is good because I have to use it a lot!!! It does tune the guitar, & it does it quickly, but it doesn't offer much in the way of tuning stability. Plus the added weight in the headstock causes balance issues? I suppose it's something I could live with if it worked perfectly but for now I feel like it's more of a hindrance than anything else?
The G-Force system would have been nice if it came as a option, but making it a standard feature at this point (& technically charging you more for it) was just a stupid move on Gibson's part!!!! I'm hoping a nice set of Grover or Kulson tuners will stabilize it enough that I can play it for at least 20 minutes or so before I have to re-tune. I probably can't ask for much more than that because I do tend to play a little heavy handed, LOL!!!
So to that extent I've got a question that some of you may be able to answer. Does anyone know if G-Force will fit & function alright on a newer Chinese Epi L.P. CUSTOM??? I've been thinking about swapping the tuning systems on the two around since the Epi. actually has really nice tuners on it already & I don't play it all that often...
