i'm pretty sure im gunna buy this amp i just have a few questions....

Is it reliable?

How satisfied are you with your purchase?

Will my Boss SD-1 solve/help the "weak" distortion? (i'm not looking for metal)

Thanks

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners

1. It's very reliable. For the price, it's very well built. I've done gigs with it, no problem.

2. Very satisfied. It's not a be-all amp, but with some modifications (i.e. a good set of tubes and a speaker change), it's a very versatile, kick ass amp. Even without a speaker change, a good set of tubes in it will greatly improve the tone (as good as the clean channel is stock, it can be better).

3. It takes pedals very nicely, so yes.

Do you have to revias after the change?

JJ 6L6GC's. A bit dark, but good tubes.

I would suggest biasing the amp as soon as you get it too, since Fender biases them a bit cold. Not too much, but it does sound better after a bias. And you should rebias any time you change tubes, especially if you change types (Groove Tubes to JJ's, for example). If you're staying within the same make and model, you don't need to rebias, but I suggest you do, just as a precaution. Adjustable bias amps drift, and though it won't be too much, it's always good too.

Don't listen to any company who says "you don't need to rebias with our tube." Yeah, you don't need to rebias, but an amp that's biased cold can sound much better by simply rebiasing. It takes like 5 minutes on the HRD anyway, so you're not spending that much time rebiasing.

By the way, for a really good guide on Hot Rods, go to this site: http://studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/ . Everything you could ever want to know about the Hot Rod's there.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe Owners

I liked mine the most with a JBL d120f speaker or a Jensen c12n. I put EH preamp tubes and svetlana power tubes. The svetlanas made a nice difference in bass response and clarity.
I did lots of gigs with mine. It was very dependable for the 2 years that I had it.
It was plenty loud, and not bad for a 1x12. It still sounds like a small amp, but better than many. It has lots of headroom. The clean tone is very clean.
The distortion is not that great with humbuckers, but it's pretty cool with single coil pickups.
I sold mine because I wanted Marshall tone - otherwise, I would have kept it.
