Hot Rod Telecaster

I've always loved the tone of the Fender Hot Rod Telecaster.

Seymour Duncan Mini in the neck and a fat single coil in the bridge.

I'm working on converting my own Telecaster for the same set up.

But I'm a bit confused on how exactly to wire it up.

I'm using a Seymourized Mini-Humbucker in the neck and a Quarter Pounder for the bridge.

The concern is the pots. Humbuckers call for 500k pots and Single call for 250k.

What value do I use? Should I use some sort of resister that alters the value going to the pots?

What if I want to use a four way switch?

Any diagrams out there?

Re: Hot Rod Telecaster

Nah. The QP is super dark. You need 500k pots for that. If you want to use a 4 way switch and run those pups in series, a 500k volume and a no load tone pot will be the best choice. 500k with the no load will give you just enough bite for series but will also be good for the other 3 positions when a 1 meg volume would be too much.

Here's the diagram: http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/tele_4ws.jpg
You can usually find the diagram you need by using google images.

I agree with Clint. Good stuff....

Re: Hot Rod Telecaster

Not to hijack the OP's thread but what would you guys suggest if you were using that neck pickup with a more vintage voiced pickup, like the SD vintage or even the JD?

Re: Hot Rod Telecaster

The vintage bridge pup is gonna want to see 250k. I use 250k in my tele with antiquity II firebird pup neck and it sounds great

Re: Hot Rod Telecaster

My latest tele build has a Seymour Duncan Vintage mini humbucker in the neck, Vintage P90 in the middle and a Five-Two in the bridge and I stayed with 250k volume and tone pots and all is good. I just finished installing a tele Quarter Pounder in a strat with the existing 250k pots and it sounds excellent.(I have some strats withe tele bridge pickups and I find I like them better than strat bridge pickups)

Re: Hot Rod Telecaster

Yeah, thing is with pot values is that it is hard to make blanket statements all the time. They are easy enough to swap, and you gain a lot of insight by testing which values work for you.

Re: Hot Rod Telecaster

I'm going to find out soon enough. Just ordered a custom tele pickguard to fit the SD mini-humbucker and a new neck. I'm going to remove all indications this guitar started as a Squier. All that will remain will be the body and some of the hardware. Wish I could figure out if there was aftermarket bridges/control plates for these that fit. My experience in the past was Squier parts are much smaller than MIM, MIA, or any other after market parts.
