Hot Stack neck

How close would a hot stack for strat neck pickup sound like a vintage single coil bridge pickup?

Also, If I'm using two neck humbuckers in the same guitar, I have to reverse a few wires, correct?

Re: Hot Stack neck

I would expect a pickup intended for the bridge position of a Stratocaster to have a little extra output and more mid and low range emphasis. A pickup intended for the neck position might lack these qualities when installed in the bridge position.

The only possible reason to reverse output conductors on the Hot Stack pickups would be if you were combining the coil split upper halves of two such pickups. In this instance, the reversal would have to be per coil - black with white, red with green.

Re: Hot Stack neck

The hot stack neck is wound hotter than the stack plus bridge. I'm hoping it'll sound like vintage strat bridge tone. I've got a spare STK-S2n I'm thinking of putting in the bridge of a guitar and that will be paired with a PGn in the neck slot.

This is a spare parts guitar project. I want to use a strat sounding pickup in the bridge for buzzsaw punk/alt rock tone and the occasional bits of clean tone rockabilly and ska. The PGn for other big rock sounds.

Re: Hot Stack neck

The Hot Stack is a ceramic magnet pickup, really isn't a vintage strat tone. Output in bridge might be about right, but it wont have the same tone or feel as an alnico pickup.

Is it close enough for your needs? Only way to really know is to try.

Resistance is deceptive on the many old stack models. They throw away a lot of resistance on a noise-cancelling coil that doesn't contribute to volume, or even reduces it.

I've heard people sound great with the Hot Stack. James Mankey used them heavily in Concrete Blonde.

Re: Hot Stack neck

I used to have it in the mid position on my strat before I restored it to stock. It used to sound so bright and crisp and clear in that guitar. I find that kind of sound plays well with my little big muff pedal for Ramones and Smashing Pumpkins tone.
