I have the TB-6 distortion and it is HOT but i do not feel it is tight or clear enough.
i want a very focused, tight, powerful pup that is metal toned(i guess sorta scooped but still full, big punchy bass, cutting but not harsh treble/presence)
500XL?
EMG 81?
dimarzio EVO?
duncan dimebucker?
other?
amps are a 5150 and older JCM 800 2203.
guitar is a old USA kramer

Re: HOT,TIGHT,CLEAR pups?

Seeing as how you have high gain amps, I'd reccomend the Custom from Duncan. If yo uwant to go active, I have a set of EMG 60's in my Hamer that sound exactly as you described. Maybe EMG's would do you well. :)

Re: HOT,TIGHT,CLEAR pups?

Yeah, I'm thinking you might be happier with a Custom. I've always thought the Distoriton was plenty tight for my taste, but perhaps a little less focused than the Custom. To me the Custom has less mids, and a little less chunk in the bass than the Distortion (still plenty, though). The highs are pretty comparable, both will cut through the mix.

Re: HOT,TIGHT,CLEAR pups?

I have a custom and it is tighter and clearer than the DD but lacks a bit in the
aggression area  other than that it is killer!!!!!!!!
what would happen if i took the magnet from the DD(large ceramic) and put it in the customs(small ceramic)???
would the custom have more output and aggression?

Re: HOT,TIGHT,CLEAR pups?

Evolution. It's probably the tightest passive pickup I've ever played. It comes off very aggressive with the amount of tightness that it has. It is fairly bright though like a JB so keep that in mind as well.

Just keep in mind that it is sorta bright....it some guitars it works fantastic but in a few I've had it sounded kinda harsh on the top end.

i used a JB and did not find that too bright, and also the DD and custom none were what i would call too bright?
the only pup i would call too bright would be the humbucker from hell in the bridge spot
:saeek: :laugh2:

I think you might like it then.

wow you should be able to EQ either of those amps for the tone you want. anyway, take a look at the EMG 85.

it is not the tone of the amps they friggin smoke!
it is in the "tightness" and "clearness" of the pup i seek
:)
the duncan custom has the tone/tighness/clarity but lacks the output i like

I have a Custom and it has quite a lot of output. Check out the EMG's.

thanks i will but first i am going to try the custom with a larger ceramic mag in it :)
this will up the output and keep the tone intact

Re: HOT,TIGHT,CLEAR pups?

I get a little more output with a TS-9 pushing the amp gain channel, I find the Custom close to perfect with it. Even the '59n sounds freaking hot this way.
