Hot, Warm, with rich mids and smooth highs: What to get?

I need a new set for my Les Paul and I need the following:

1. Hot output
2. Warm tone (my amps are very bright)
3. Must handle high gain well and with definition
4. For brithish high gain (think modded JCM 800)

What I'm looking for is Vintage tone with balls!

What should I get?

You may want to try a hot PAF-style pickup in the 8.8K Ohm-9.2K Ohm range with an A5. If wound correctly, you won't have as much scooped mids.

The Custom Custom is also nice and warm with plenty of power, sustain, and distortion.

And even the Alternate 8 might work for your application as well.

Besides the Custom Custom, you may also consider the Air Zone by DiMarzio. It will likely have deeper bass than the CC.

DiMarzio Breed or perhaps Brobucker. The Custom Custom may be too loose for you.

What pu's do you have in the LP and what don't you like about them?

The CC has no highs, IMHO, not smooth highs.

APH sounds more right.

Considering it's a Les Paul I'm going to go out on a limb and say JB

I replaced a Full Shred on a mahogany guitar with one and the midrange is so richly detailed sounding. It isn't shrill. It's really pleasant. Though I miss the lows.

I have a LP with a JB/P-90 combo. Like this combo a lot. JB leans a bit toward the high end and the P-90 leans toward the low end. The middle position sounds sweet in this guitar (full spectrum of booming sound- but not too muddy). Super versatile.

your description is the Custom Custom to a T. my favorite thing about that pickup is that it gives my Fender Bassman a very Marshallesque crunch...perfect for a british hi-gain sound.

I get that sound with a C5/'59N. I use 250K pots on the bridge (volume & tone) to shave off some of the treble, and bring out the mids. 500K's on teh enck for definition. Works for me in LP's, SG's, & 335's.

I'm terribly sorry to give you this response on the Seymour Duncan forum but in the name of honesty I couldn't do any different. Considering your wants towards a warmer tone since your amps sound already thin and interest in pickups who can handle high gain without getting muddy and preserving still a PAF tone within,on a Les Paul I must say your ideal combination must be Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge (don't get fooled by the name though,it's around since 1972 so it covers very well classic rock sounds too and has been used by a number of artists like Ace Frehley,Iron Maiden and Paul Gilbert) and a Dimarzio PAF Joe in the neck to improve note and chord definition. If that duo won't take you where you wanna go come hunt me down and kill me with your weapon of choice :)
